When speaking of Winslow Homer, the great artist of the 19th century, it is important to remember that the majority of his works were never seen by the public. To put this in a better perspective and to be more concise with this statement, Winslow Homer sometimes did not receive credit for his work. While employed with Harpers Weekly and Frank Leslies Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, Homer would, either by persuasion or error, not sign or take credit for most of his sketchings. The reasoning behind this was so that the ease of replacing an artist on the payroll for the papers could be achieved. This may seem strange and not at all like an artist that strove for recognition and admiration, yet it was more of the norm than one would think.

Winslow Homer seemingly cared not for the notoriety and fame that would still come to him, yet chose to make certain that he was able to pay his way through life without the assistance of family or friends. This speaks a great deal about the characteristics of Winslow Homer as not just a man yet one of the most successful and beloved American artist of the 19th century.

Winslow Homer was born on February 24, 1836 in the Northeast section of the United States. Many of his earlier works were sketches of his native Prouts Neck, Massachusetts and the beautiful Adirondacks. At the tender age of 19, Winslow Homer went to work under the tutelage of famed lithographer JH Buford in Boston. It was during this early time that Winslow Homers career as an artist urged the artist to expand and seek out more adventurous opportunities in the world of art. After completing his apprentice at Bufords lithographic firm in Massachusetts, Homer then became a student in the art world at the National Academy of Design. One of his professors was the famous Frederick Rondel and he would say later in life that teacher Rondel would have the greatest influence on his color schemes.

After accepting a position at Harpers Weekly, Winslow Homer was sent to the front lines to record in oil based paints and charcoal renderings, one of the most terrible times in American history, the US Civil War. An interesting fact about Winslow Homer is the methods in which he portrayed the battles and men of the war. Homer appreciated his innate ability to depict the more human side of the battle. And with every stroke we were taken to the field and could even smell the smoke from cannon and the stench of dying men in agonistic primal screams.

This can be seen remarkably in the treasured piece by Winslow Homer, The Wishbone. This piece showed Union soldiers enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner and sharing the proverbial wishbone. It was works such as this that showed the human side and the sentimentality of men, in general, that vaulted Winslow Homer to fame and success as one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. Winslow Homer would travel all around North America and especially the cold northeastern coast of Maine, sketching and painting what is deemed some of the most beautiful landscapes of the area.

In 1865 Winslow Homer was elected as a member of the National Academy of Design where he had studied earlier and this notoriety and fame that Winslow Homer dodged, eventually caught up with this great artist. Winslow Homer passed away on September 29, 1910 and is buried the familys Massachusetts burial plot.

Architects can choose from a number of plastic employee lockers for factory restroom design. Plastic is recommended over metal because of its superior longevity. In most factory environments, there are all sorts of airborne agents that will corrode metal. Many factories are also located near the sea, and salt air definitely will corrode metal. Consider as well the cost of a severely damaged metal locker, or a metal locker that loses its paint job, and you can easily see how something that appears to be cost-effective at face value is not really cost-effective in the long run.

Contrast this with plastic employee lockers that are built with plastic pieces that are contiguously colored throughout. This means the plastic itself is colored instead of being painted after production. A storage unit made from this material will never need to be repainted. Employee lockers for factory restroom designs come in a variety of sizes and configurations to suit particular storage needs. Some, such as bench lockers, are ideal for storing tools and special protective gear. Other units which feature what we normally picture in our minds when we think of a locker are designed to neatly hang day clothes and to store personal items.

This is not only a benefit to workers on the production floor alone. Many times, executives, clients, and investors come to tour a facility to inspect its progress. These individuals will need to wear protective clothing, ideally, if they are going to be near certain areas or materials otherwise deemed hazardous. Incorporating high-quality employee lockers into every factory restroom design makes facility tours of this nature more common and much safer than ever before.

Some organizations have hesitated to invest in lockers because they worry about liability resultant from theft. While this is a valid concern, modern lockers are built with maximum security in mind. All locker types are manufactured to accommodate a variety of lock types. However, for factory restroom designs where employees will no doubt be storing valuables, it is recommended that lockers be custom ordered with built-in combination locks or built-in key locks.

The health risks associated with asbestos exposure are better understood today than they were several years ago. The major health factor associated with asbestos exposure is mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos is a substance which is chemically composed of impure forms of magnesium-silicate fibers. Asbestos was once widely used because of its durability and heat-resistant qualities. The authorities placed it on a ban after scientists linked exposure to the substance to mesothelioma and other lung conditions. These conditions were widely noticed among certain categories of workers in occupational areas such as the military, builders and contractors.

Workplaces Prone to Asbestos Exposure

The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that the insulation in many buildings in the US contains asbestos. Workplaces which carry the greatest risk of asbestos exposure are:

These occupations are high-risk for exposure to asbestos because workers interface directly with materials that contain the fine asbestos fibers. This happens because the workers gather asbestos dust and fibers on their clothes which they then take home.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned new uses of asbestos in the USA, but in 1991 their efforts to have most uses of asbestos banned by 1997 fell through as the US Federal Court blocked this action. One blogger, Asbest21, stated in a post on Blog Carnival that manufacturers were aware from as far back as seventy years ago that asbestos was hazardous, but they kept that knowledge hidden. Workers exposed to asbestos were not given sufficient warning of the associated dangers in the mid-1960s.

Seeking Redress for Asbestos Exposure

Many workers exposed to asbestos and who later develop mesothelioma or other lung conditions go for years without realizing that something is wrong. This form of cancer takes up to twenty or forty years to manifest itself. This means that people exposed to asbestos can live normal lives for several years before realizing that their health is deteriorating. The nonspecific nature of the symptoms of mesothelioma can further delay the detection and subsequent treatment for the condition.

Conclusion

Despite the efforts of the Environmental Protection Agency to advocate for the health of workers exposed to asbestos the threat remains high for some workers. These workers face the risk of developing the associated conditions of asbestos exposure. It is best that workers exposed to asbestos receive regular screenings to have early detection of any developing condition. Feeling healthy and having no apparent symptoms are not valid reasons to avoid having regular screenings.
