Israel Journal: Is Yossi Vardi a good father to his entrepreneurial children?

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone is currently, courtesy of the Israeli government and friends, visiting Israel. This is a first-hand account of his experiences and may — as a result — not fully comply with Wikinews’ neutrality policy. Please note this is a journalism experiment for Wikinews and put constructive criticism on the collaboration page.

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Dr. Yossi Vardi is known as Israel’s ‘Father of the Entrepreneur’, and he has many children in the form of technology companies he has helped to incubate in Tel Aviv‘s booming Internet sector. At the offices of Superna, one such company, he introduced a whirlwind of presentations from his baby incubators to a group of journalists. What stuck most in my head was when Vardi said, “What is important is not the technology, but the talent.” Perhaps because he repeated this after each young Internet entrepreneur showed us his or her latest creation under Vardi’s tutelage. I had a sense of déjà vu from this mantra. A casual reader of the newspapers during the Dot.com boom will remember a glut of stories that could be called “The Rise of the Failure”; people whose technology companies had collapsed were suddenly hot commodities to start up new companies. This seemingly paradoxical thinking was talked about as new back then; but even Thomas Edison—the Father of Invention—is oft-quoted for saying, “I have not failed. I have just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.”

Vardi’s focus on encouraging his brood of talent regardless of the practicalities stuck out to me because of a recent pair of “dueling studies” The New York Times has printed. These are the sort of studies that confuse parents on how to raise their kids. The first, by Carol Dweck at Stanford University, came to the conclusion that children who are not praised for their efforts, regardless of the outcome’s success, rarely attempt more challenging and complex pursuits. According to Dweck’s study, when a child knows that they will receive praise for being right instead of for tackling difficult problems, even if they fail, they will simply elect to take on easy tasks in which they are assured of finding the solution.

Only one month earlier the Times produced another story for parents to agonize over, this time based on a study from the Brookings Institution, entitled “Are Kids Getting Too Much Praise?” Unlike Dweck’s clinical study, Brookings drew conclusions from statistical data that could be influenced by a variety of factors (since there was no clinical control). The study found American kids are far more confident that they have done well than their Korean counterparts, even when the inverse is true. The Times adds in the words of a Harvard faculty psychologist who intoned, “Self-esteem is based on real accomplishments. It’s all about letting kids shine in a realistic way.” But this is not the first time the self-esteem generation’s proponents have been criticized.

Vardi clearly would find himself encouraged by Dweck’s study, though, based upon how often he seemed to ask us to keep our eyes on the people more than the products. That’s not to say he has not found his latest ICQ, though only time—and consumers—will tell.

For a Web 2.User like myself, I was most fascinated by Fixya, a site that, like Wikipedia, exists on the free work of people with knowledge. Fixya is a tech support site where people who are having problems with equipment ask a question and it is answered by registered “experts.” These experts are the equivalent of Wikipedia’s editors: they are self-ordained purveyors of solutions. But instead of solving a mystery of knowledge a reader has in their head, these experts solve a problem related to something you have bought and do not understand. From baby cribs to cellular phones, over 500,000 products are “supported” on Fixya’s website. The Fixya business model relies upon the good will of its experts to want to help other people through the ever-expanding world of consumer appliances. But it is different from Wikipedia in two important ways. First, Fixya is for-profit. The altruistic exchange of information is somewhat dampened by the knowledge that somebody, somewhere, is profiting from whatever you give. Second, with Wikipedia it is very easy for a person to type in a few sentences about a subject on an article about the Toshiba Satellite laptop, but to answer technical problems a person is experiencing seems like a different realm. But is it? “It’s a beautiful thing. People really want to help other people,” said the presenter, who marveled at the community that has already developed on Fixya. “Another difference from Wikipedia is that we have a premium content version of the site.” Their premium site is where they envision making their money. Customers with a problem will assign a dollar amount based upon how badly they need an answer to a question, and the expert-editors of Fixya will share in the payment for the resolved issue. Like Wikipedia, reputation is paramount to Fixya’s experts. Whereas Wikipedia editors are judged by how they are perceived in the Wiki community, the amount of barnstars they receive and by the value of their contributions, Fixya’s customers rate its experts based upon the usefulness of their advice. The site is currently working on offering extended warranties with some manufacturers, although it was not clear how that would work on a site that functioned on the work of any expert.

Another collaborative effort product presented to us was YouFig, which is software designed to allow a group of people to collaborate on work product. This is not a new idea, although may web-based products have generally fallen flat. The idea is that people who are working on a multi-media project can combine efforts to create a final product. They envision their initial market to be academia, but one could see the product stretching to fields such as law, where large litigation projects with high-level of collaboration on both document creation and media presentation; in business, where software aimed at product development has generally not lived up to its promises; and in the science and engineering fields, where multi-media collaboration is quickly becoming not only the norm, but a necessity.

For the popular consumer market, Superna, whose offices hosted our meeting, demonstrated their cost-saving vision for the Smart Home (SH). Current SH systems require a large, expensive server in order to coordinate all the electronic appliances in today’s air-conditioned, lit and entertainment-saturated house. Such coordinating servers can cost upwards of US$5,000, whereas Superna’s software can turn a US$1,000 hand-held tablet PC into household remote control.

There were a few start-ups where Vardi’s fatherly mentoring seemed more at play than long-term practical business modeling. In the hot market of WiFi products, WeFi is software that will allow groups of users, such as friends, share knowledge about the location of free Internet WiFi access, and also provide codes and keys for certain hot spots, with access provided only to the trusted users within a group. The mock-up that was shown to us had a Google Maps-esque city block that had green points to the known hot spots that are available either for free (such as those owned by good Samaritans who do not secure their WiFi access) or for pay, with access information provided for that location. I saw two long-term problems: first, WiMAX, which is able to provide Internet access to people for miles within its range. There is already discussion all over the Internet as to whether this technology will eventually make WiFi obsolete, negating the need to find “hot spots” for a group of friends. Taiwan is already testing an island-wide WiMAX project. The second problem is if good Samaritans are more easily located, instead of just happened-upon, how many will keep their WiFi access free? It has already become more difficult to find people willing to contribute to free Internet. Even in Tel Aviv, and elsewhere, I have come across several secure wireless users who named their network “Fuck Off” in an in-your-face message to freeloaders.

Another child of Vardi’s that the Brookings Institution might say was over-praised for self-esteem but lacking real accomplishment is AtlasCT, although reportedly Nokia offered to pay US$8.1 million for the software, which they turned down. It is again a map-based software that allows user-generated photographs to be uploaded to personalized street maps that they can share with friends, students, colleagues or whomever else wants to view a person’s slideshow from their vacation to Paris (“Dude, go to the icon over Boulevard Montmartre and you’ll see this girl I thought was hot outside the Hard Rock Cafe!”) Aside from the idea that many people probably have little interest in looking at the photo journey of someone they know (“You can see how I traced the steps of Jesus in the Galilee“), it is also easy to imagine Google coming out with its own freeware that would instantly trump this program. Although one can see an e-classroom in architecture employing such software to allow students to take a walking tour through Rome, its desirability may be limited.

Whether Vardi is a smart parent for his encouragement, or in fact propping up laggards, is something only time will tell him as he attempts to bring these products of his children to market. The look of awe that came across each company’s representative whenever he entered the room provided the answer to the question of Who’s your daddy?

Part 2 of 2 Walmart Public Relations

by

Ronn Torossian

(Part 2 of 2 Book Excerpt):

Walmart personal? Sure. This is not just about the greeters who stand at the entrance of every store. It s about the connection the store makes with individual shoppers when they buy knee-high socks and corn chips. Customers feel secure that they are getting a great deal in a no-frills, one-stop shopping experience. That dependability makes for a deeply personal consumer experience. The retail giant is real because it connects with shoppers basic needs, and with their financial and time constraints. When Walmart was located primarily in rural areas it was often the only large store available to people this personal connection helped make the store into the giant it is today. All the studies say that the average consumer saves a considerable amount of money, in the thousands of dollars, when they do all their shopping at Walmart, says Denny.

The average American family makes $55,000 a year saving thousands over a year resonates in a meaningful way with an awful lot of people. While few will grow a business to Walmart proportions, there is a lot to learn from Walmart s mistakes. Realize who you are, not just who you want to become. Be realistic and appreciate that recognizing your limitations is as important as building on your strengths. Both tell you a lot about what you can do to maintain your brand identity and trust while still expanding your business.

In Walmart s case, it failed to understand that shoppers would not look primarily to the company for fashion-forward clothing or innovative home design solutions. The mixed messages customers were getting from some of the store s changes were disconcerting. Walmart s CEO, Michael Duke, saw to it that shelves have been restocked with staple items that had been shed in the previous merchandise overhaul. The company still looks to a handful of designers and celebrities to introduce lines of clothing and tabletop decor, but the actual designs are still basic in nature. Nothing crazy or too edgy whether it s in-house brands, Miley Cyrus, or Hanes, you re still buying fairly basic T-shirts and yoga pants.

And Walmart hasn t stopped evolving and changing the brand but it continues to get even smarter. In January 2011, the nation s largest retailer announced a five-year plan to lower the amounts of salt, fat, and sugar in thousands of its house-branded Great Value packaged foods and drop prices on fruits and vegetables. This recent evolutionary shift fits well with the company s brand and mission and with the times (it coincides with Michelle Obama s healthy America initiative, Let s Move! ).

Walmart has been selling organic produce and packaged food for some time, making these formerly higher-end products available to their demographic and luring more upscale shoppers into the store. One of the reasons the company is making the changes over the course of several years is to give it time to both overcome and solve technical hurdles, and to give consumers time to adjust to the foods new taste. The company acknowledged that it doesn t do it any good to introduce healthier food if people reject it and it will take time for people to become accustomed to the change. Taking it slow also minimizes the chance that Walmart will have product line, quality, and delivery problems.

Walmart is also keeping up with technology. In April 2011, Walmart Stores agreed to buy (for a rumored $300 million) Kosmix, a social media company focused on e-commerce, as the retail behemoth looks for newer, better, and faster ways to tap into customers needs and thoughts via social networking sites and smartphones.

All are smart moves from America s biggest retailer.

Sunday, October 17, 2010

Yannis Dalianides, a Greek film director who worked on over 60 movies, has died at the age of 87. Dalianides died after spending a month in hospital. He was known as the “godfather” of the Greek musical and the “Gentle Knight of Popular Cinema”.

Born in 1923, Dalianides was placed in a children’s home until he was adopted. He made his first appearance in children’s theatre at the age of 10. He studied at the Drama School of the Thessaloniki Conservatory, before moving to Vienna and studying dance. Dalianides tried choreography before turning to cinema.

After appearing as an actor he directed his first film in 1959, titled, Mousitsa (The Temptress). He continued to have success with films such as Some Like It Cold, Downhill, and Training Old Man Yorgis. From 1961 to 1977, Dalianides worked exclusively for the Fino’s Film Company. Dalianides is credited with the introduction of the musical into Greece but preferred the term “musical comedy”.

Dalianides worked into his seventies. His last project was Mikres Amarties, a television series made in 1999. Dalianides funeral will take place on Monday; he will be buried at Athens’ First Cemetery.

BLUE BADGE GUIDES FLY THE FLAG FOR LIVERPOOL’S WORLD HERITAGE STATUS

by

Neil McDonaldWe spoke to a Blue Badge Tourist Guide about Liverpool – how it has stormed into the list of top cities in the world to visit and how the threat of losing World Heritage Status could affect its future prosperity.Merseyside’s major city is a magnet for tourists the world over. Popular with Indonesians is a trip to Anfiled and LFC, taking in the ground’s selfie trail, the smart new visitor centre and ‘disney-esque’ merchandise shop. Culture vultures flock to admire the biggest collection of listed buildings in Britain. And the ever popular Beatles are a particular draw for American visitors. Leading local Tour Guide, Claire Rider, told us:’As well as individual travellers and tour groups, the city has seen more than one hundred thousand cruise liner passengers during 2017.’At busy periods there are large parties of Spanish and Italian, among other nationalities of students. International visitors exploring the city in 2016 contributed to the region’s visitor economy that exceeded 4.3 billion. Claire, who is based in Liverpool, explains why this booming business is under threat:’We’re a city rich in maritime heritage, this has driven many ground breaking moments in history. For instance we had the first branch of the Bank of England outside London; the first American Embassy on foreign soil and the global cotton exchange is still in the city centre. Until people arrive here they often don’t realise the significance of the city to The British Empire over centuries. But for many others the UNESCO World Heritage Status communicates that simply and instantly.’During the last decade the number of day visitors has almost doubled. It’s no wonder the city’s tourism industry is twitchy at the thought of being downgraded. The chance of the city being struck off as a World Heritage site centres on a planning decision to transform 60 hectares of redundant docklands into 9,000 flats, offices and shops. The model for the scheme has been described by The Guardian newspaper as resembling a ‘row of gaudy crystal ornaments’.The same newspaper carried an interview with the mayor of Liverpool. It claims he has dismissed the anti-development campaigners as luddites and the UNESCO ‘certificate on the wall’ didn’t play a role in boosting the city’s prospects. Claire added:’The guiding qualification takes months and is a hefty financial commitment. The blue badge is the UK’s highest guiding endorsement. There are dozens of qualified guides in the city and many more tourist guides. Their continued employment is more secure with the UNESCO endorsement. To be qualified by The Institute of Tourist Guiding we have to learn about the entire UK. We’ve all been through that training, with the in depth knowledge acquired I can honestly say that if any city deserves the UNESCO accolade it’s Liverpool.’In July 2017 UNESCO officials gave Liverpool a stay of execution for up to 12 months. Campaigners are not resting on their laurels whilst the Mercantile City remains on the World Heritage ‘In Danger’ list. The entire situation does open up the debate on whether skyscrapers detract from the fact that the destination was a major trading centre for two centuries. Six sites were added to the World Heritage list in 2004 in recognition of their role in the growth of the British Empire. Some argue that in London the Shard and The Gherkin have been built close to World Heritage sites without threat to their status. But in contrast the 5bn worth of buildings planned for the Liverpool waterfront would occupy up to 600,000 square metres. The UNESCO officials will have to take a view on whether local planning officers are acting in the interests of local heritage. To put it into context other World Heritage sites across the globe include the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon and the pyramids in Egypt.Another proposed building that forms part of the proposals is a permanent cruise liner terminal. Nobody in the tourism industry would argue one is not required, but they may question at what cost. The plans are adjacent to Liverpool’s Three Graces and would entirely transform the skyline.Henrietta Billings, Director of SAVE Britain’s Heritage is quoted as saying:’This is a final warning shot for Liverpool and the British Government. International heritage status doesn’t just put LIverpool on the world stage, it brings cultural tourism, urban regeneration, and sustainable visitor attractions.’Billings went on to say losing the status would be an international embarrassment and hugely costly mistake. The current reprieve stands until 2018.

Claire Rider holds the highest UK endorsement for tourist guiding – The Blue Badge. Based in Liverpool, she shares her thoughts on the positive impact of tourism on the city and how the UNESCO World Heritage status underpins this. The city’s guides welcome visitors from across the world to show them the amazing architecture, history and culture. Many run day excursions and tours that take in The Lake District, North Wales, Ireland and The Isle of Man.

Ozzy Osbourne’s personal possessions fetch $800,000 for charity

Sunday, December 2, 2007

American heavy metal performer Ozzy Osbourne, who became famous as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath and later as a solo act, has raised more than US$800,000 for The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program, founded by his spouse Sharon Osbourne at the Cedars Sinai Hospital, by auctioning off personal items.

A number of the items that he auctioned off over the two day period have been seen on his reality TV show The Osbournes, which featured home life with Sharon, Ozzy and their two children. Amongst some of the higher-priced items were a carved walnut Victorian-style custom built pool table which raised $11,250, a painting from Edourad Drouot which fetched $10,500, a pair of Ozzy’s famous round glasses which raised $5,250 and a dog bed given to Sharon by Elton John which sold for $2,375.

Some more famous items were also amongst the 500 lots offered. Ozzy’s black satin coat, complete with bat-wing cape, raised $3,300 and a hand-painted floral cup used regularly on The Osbournes made $1,625. A bronze plaque of a demon’s head that was regularly seen in its position adorning the front door of their house had been expected to go for $800 to $1,200instead raised $8,750. A wire model of the Eiffel Tower from on the kitchen table sold for $10,000, while skull-covered trainers Ozzy had worn reached $2,625. Bidders came from as far away as Germany to buy what they could from his mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

However, three cars included in the auction failed to attract bidders and did not sell. They were a 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur, estimated at $160,000 to $180,000, a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V sedan estimated at $30,000 to $40,000 and a 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 Club Coupe previously owned by author Danielle Steel estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. Sharon had earlier said of the cars “We’re not great car people. They really don’t do a lot for us.

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, which organised the two-day sale, said “It did very well. It raised some good money for a very worthy cause.”

“For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular.,” he went on. He also commented on the fact that there was fierce competition for the many artworks included. “We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don’t see every day. For the most part the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd.”

A vocational nurse working for Dr. John Capriotti, a plastic surgeon, was accused of setting the fire that wounded several and killed three people in Houston, Texas on March 28. She was allegedly trying to cover up the fact that she hadn’t completed the paperwork for an upcoming audit.

The fire began in Dr. Capriotti’s office on the fifth floor and quickly spread to the sixth. Arson investigators from the Houston Fire Department, the FBI and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had been working to determine the source of the fire.

Restaurant candles can completely change a room from a lifeless room to a room full of life in an instant. However, choosing the best candle type and holder is very critical if you want to achieve that perfect atmosphere in your restaurant.

For many restaurants, candles act as a source of elegance, soft light, and are also used to add a warm sparkling glow to a romantic dinner. Their twinkling lights are mesmerizing and easily promote a relaxed atmosphere to enhance the dining experience. If you want all diners to enjoy, votive candles are best for your restaurant. Completed with votive candle holders, these candles will not only look more elegant but will also burn for longer hours. The votive candles are available in many colors and scents.

When it comes to choosing the best restaurant candles, it is best to choose unscented candles. Doing this will help to preserve the aroma of freshly cooked food. You also need to choose quality candles made from quality wax. The candles should also have lead free wicks if you want all to enjoy candles with clear and smokeless burn.

By choosing quality restaurant candles, you will be able to ensure that flames from the candles are contained properly. If you are buying votives, then votive candle holders are a must-include. There are many candle holder options that you can choose from. These include different vases, which come in various shapes like square or cylinder. If you want to choose the best shapes, colors, and sizes for your vases, it is important to look at the room first and choose candles and vases that will suit the environment. The many types available have different impacts. So, know what the interior décor is like and how much space is available. Thinking of these two factors will ensure that the restaurant candles blend in well and are not overwhelming to the available space.

If you do not know which styles or designs will be best suited to the atmosphere, a little research will definitely help you to choose the right candle holders. Keep in mind that the right candles for your restaurant will look even more inspiring if completed with engaging candle holders. You can get more information online, visit interior design stores, restaurants, or other places where you will get a little inspiration. Choose restaurant candles with the best colors and designs that will form a perfect setting.

When buying restaurant candles, do not buy candles just because you are in love with the design or style, consider their use and the effect they will have in your restaurant?s setting. With the wide variety available today, you have the power to avoid uninteresting candles. So, go for candles that will add a little flicker. It is also advisable that you buy in bulk. This way, you will be able to buy wholesale candles and enjoy discounted wholesale prices. Remember to shop around first if you want to find excellent deals that will suit all your candle needs.
