British singer Susan Boyle released from clinic

Friday, June 5, 2009

British singer Susan Boyle has been released from a private mental clinic. On May 31, Boyle was admitted by ambulance to the Priory clinic in London, England after she began to act strange in her hotel room, reportedly suffering an “emotional breakdown.”

Boyle’s brother, Gerry Boyle, told GMTV that Susan is “a lot more like herself,” and that she is “much happier.” He also added that Boyle is “now beginning to believe that, ‘Yes indeed, I will be a singer.'”

Boyle, 47, from Blackburn, West Lothian, in Scotland, came in second place on the British reality show Britain’s Got Talent (BGT). Boyle was beaten by the dance group Diversity on Saturday who got 24% of the public vote, with Boyle receiving 20%. She took the world by storm after her debut appearance on April 11 singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the award-winning musical Les Misérables. Just a day after appearing on the show, Boyle became a YouTube sensation with her performance receiving nearly 9 million views. To date, the YouTube clip has been viewed by over 66 million people worldwide.

Traditionally, finalists of the show go on a concert tour of the UK, although producers for Britain’s Got Talent will not say whether Boyle plans to be a part of it. A spokesperson stated they are respecting Boyle’s privacy amid her health concerns. Rehearsals for the tour are reported to begin next week, with the first show starting on June 12.

Drug-resistant infections on the rise in American hospitals

April 9, 2005

A rise in flesh-eating staph infections has worried doctors about the possible spread of drug resistant bacteria.

Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as staph, is a bacteria that commonly causes skin infections in otherwise healthy people. However, as a persistent threat in hospitals, it tends to infect patients who are already sick and whose systems are vulnerable due to IV lines that pierce the skin. Doctors have already battled for years against drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, but the struggle has generally been confined to hospitals.

Now, however, Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) has been spreading in communities outside hospitals. Cases have multiplied by 25 times since 1998 at the University of Chicago. A Los Angeles hospital documented 14 cases of the flesh-eating infection, where patients required substantial time in intensive care and surgery. The infections are particularly problematic because nearly a quarter of people who get a staph infection require hospitalization.

Staph infections are spread much like other diseases, with crowded conditions, poor hygiene, and skin-to-skin contact most frequently to blame. At higher risk are prison inmates, homeless people, military personnel, and families with kids in day care. Athletes also have a higher risk, because sweating makes it easier for bacteria to infect the skin.

Covington, Georgia Vampire Diaries Hometown

Covington, Georgia- Vampire Diaries Hometown

by

April Gipson

Tourists are coming in droves to Covington, Georgia, a small town 30 minutes east of Atlanta. The Vampire Diaries, a popular drama on the CW Network, has been filming in this antebellum town since 2009. The setting for the fictional town of Mystic Falls is not in Virginia after all, but in Covington, Georgia. Series fans come to Covington to follow in the footsteps of two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon, and Elena, the woman they both obsess over.

Last year visitors came from 44 states and 33 foreign countries to discover the favorite haunts of the series characters. What they find is an old Southern town with a downtown square, stately homes, and lots of charm. The Covington area abounds in history. During the Civil War Union forces burned bridges over the nearby Alcovy and Yellow rivers and destroyed the railroad, cutting off communications and supplies between Atlanta and Augusta. A number of beautiful homes escaped the war undamaged, and their exteriors are regularly used in filming.

Tourists come to Covington to see the Mystic Falls Courthouse, which is actually the Newton County Courthouse, the Gilbert House, the Lockwood Mansion, and the Mystic Falls Cemetery. The fictional Mystic Grill is currently being made into a real restaurant. Many of the shops in town carry vampire related merchandise.

A private tour company in town operates The Vampire Stalkers Mystic Falls Tours. Visitors taking their tour will see a number of sites from the first four seasons, with season five sites to be added soon. All of the homes used in the filming are privately owned and are not open to the public. However the tour has special permission to take visitors on their grounds to look around. The tour involves a lot of walking, with a shuttle bus transport from site to site. Estimated tour time is 2-4 hours, depending on group size. Tour price is $55, and tours start from the Covington/Newton Visitor Information Center at 2101 Clark Street.

Covington s downtown is thriving, with lots of small shops and restaurants. Festivals, concerts, and other events regularly bring visitors to town. Covington is becoming known as the Hollywood of the South. The Covington Walk of Stars is a self-guided tour that takes visitors to 36 locations in town where more than 60 movies and TV series have filmed. The Vampire Diaries is just the latest in a long list of shows that have filmed in town. Covington sites have been used in The Dukes of Hazzard, In the Heat of the Night, American Reunion, My Cousin Vinny, Halloween II, A Man Called Peter, and many others. A star icon indicates a location site. Walk of Stars maps are available at the Visitor Center.

by

Kelly Liyakasa

If you’ve ever pondered the question, ‘Who am I related to?’ you aren’t alone. While communicating by way of the Internet and the cell phone have brought many of us together, there are plenty of individuals who can count their family members on one hand.

Genealogy services have special family tree features that allow inquiring minds to piece their rich ancestral roots together. If you want to build a family tree with ease, keep the following in mind:

Global connection-Even if your entire family lives in New Jersey, sites like One Great Family complete the puzzle by demonstrating where your family delineated from through their Family Tree Connection feature.

Census Collection-Don’t settle for a family tree builder solely containing US Census Records. Ancestry is a genealogy service that incorporates UK records, as well as specialized documents, such as military records.

Ellis Island-Many of our ancestors passed through this infamous Hudson port and sites like Kindred Konnections allow you to scour records taken during our nation’s great migration period.

Family Tree Platform-Some genealogy services require you to download software before you research and store family tree data, but One Great Family lets you upload your family’s information directly into an intuitive database.

Though filling in every gap in your family tree may be impossible, building a virtual replica of your ancestral background isn’t the dry task it once was. 6StarReviews.com found genealogy services hosting innovative research tools, scannable records and simple data uploads, allowing anyone with Internet access to piece together their ancestral story.

Will Wikimedia “run on Sun”?

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

An internal Wikimedia communiqué was leaked over the weekend. Like many e-mails, the document is a chain of forwards, replies, and attachments. The attached Portable Document Format (PDF) file was from a PowerPoint presentation, entitled “Wikimedia Foundation: Past, Present, and Future”. The presentation is watermarked confidential, do not distribute, and details the Foundation’s recent financial, technical, and traffic history, outlines near-term forecasts for all three, and makes suggestions for slightly longer horizons as well. By itself the document led to several inter-connected news stories.

President Bush, Congress agree on economic stimulus package

Friday, January 25, 2008

U.S. President George W. Bush and Congressional leaders from both political parties have reached agreement on US$150 billion in tax relief in an effort to help stimulate the United States economy. VOA White House Correspondent Scott Stearns has the story.

The agreement includes provision to give up to US$600 in tax rebates to millions of wage earners and an additional US$300 refund for each child. It allows businesses to immediately write off 50 percent of capital equipment purchases.

President Bush says it is an effective, robust and temporary set of incentives that will boost the economy and create new jobs.

“This package has the right set of policies and is the right size,” he said. “The incentives in this package will lead to higher consumer spending and increased business investment this year.”

The incentives in this package will lead to higher consumer spending and increased business investment this year.

The president says he knows Americans are concerned about their economic future, with the challenges of higher energy prices and a falling housing market slowing growth.

President Bush is urging the House of Representatives and Senate to pass the agreement as soon as possible.

“We have an opportunity to come together and take the swift, decisive action our economy urgently needs,” he added.

Stock markets around the world dipped sharply early this week amid widespread fears of a U.S. recession and its potential to drag down foreign markets as well.

The stimulus deal was an unusual display of bipartisanship in Washington, with Democrats and Republicans in the House making concessions to get the deal done quickly.

Republicans dropped a provision that would have allowed businesses to reclaim taxes previously paid. Democrats dropped their demands for increases in food stamps and unemployment benefits.

This bipartisan package should be acted upon rapidly and can help alleviate the economic pain felt by millions of Americans.

House Speaker Democrat Nancy Pelosi says she is not totally pleased with the package, but knows it will help stimulate the economy.

“This bipartisan package should be acted upon rapidly and can help alleviate the economic pain felt by millions of Americans,” she said.

John Boehner is the leader of Republicans in the House of Representatives. He says it was not easy for Republicans and Democrats to agree on a plan, but he is confident it is in the best interests of the nation.

“This agreement is a big win for the American people,” he said. “It will stimulate our economy in the most direct and effective way possible by putting money in the hands of middle income American families and by giving businesses incentives to create and build new jobs in our country.”

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was the president’s lead negotiator with Congress.

“I know the work isn’t done yet,” he noted. “As the Speaker said, we’ve got more to do. And I am looking forward to working with the Senate and working with the House to get a package as soon as possible, because, again, speed is of the essence.”

Senate Majority Leader Democrat Harry Reid says he wants to get the plan to the president for signature by February 15. But changes in the Senate may slow passage of the package, as Reid says senators may consider restoring provisions to extend unemployment benefits.

Saudi Arabia plans to open embassy in Finland

Saturday, October 20, 2007

It has been announced that Saudi Arabia is planning to open an official embassy in Finland, to signify continuing improvement in relations between the two countries.

Teemu Tanner, director general of Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, said to reporters concerning Finnish President Tarja Halonen’s first visit to Saudi Arabia on Sunday, “One indication of this visit is that you (Saudi Arabia) are planning to open an embassy here in Helsinki,” adding that “We regard this as extremely important for relations,” and that it is only a matter of time before the facility is made available.

Another act set to strengthen diplomatic relations is the planned visit of a trade delegation headed by Saudi Minister of Trade and Commerce Hashim Yamani, which will arrive in Finland next month.

“Our relationship is no longer in relation to trade,” said Tanner. “More broadly, we will discuss regional and global issues. It is extremely important for us to know Saudi Arabia’s views on Iraq, Iran, but also issues such as Somalia… One objective of the visit is to convey notes on international questions, as we enter a very interesting phase in the Middle East peace process,” adding that the presidential visit is a relational “landmark” that will “crystallize” Finland’s image to Saudi Arabia.

Despite the comment that the international cooperation is no longer entirely a trade issue, he did point out Saudi Arabia’s important role in the Finnish economy as one of the five largest importers of Finnish products. Finland’s main exports to Saudi Arabia are mobile phones, paper, wood and machinery, while Saudi Arabia exports large quantities of raw materials for use in manufacturing plastics. The total volume if this trade is estimated to be worth over €840 million.

Other topics on the table for the two nations to discuss during Halonen’s visit include energy, the role of science, environmental issues and combating terrorism, as well as other global issues. Tanner has also suggested tourism may be a future area of attention, with a possibility of package holidays for Finnish tourists being organized to Saudi Arabia.

Finland and Saudi Arabia have been officially involved in diplomatic relations since 1969. Finland has maintained an embassy in Saudi Arabia since 1974.
