Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

CUPERTINO – Late today, Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes Music Store (iTMS) was opened to Canadians. The 700,000+ songs are priced at CAD 99¢ (USD 84¢) per song, the lowest price of any iTMS localization to date. The Canada localization also provides customers the same personal rights for songs as with existing stores:

 • Ability to listen to a song on 5 computers.
 • Unlimited CD burning.
 • Burning the same playlist up to seven times.
 • Unlimited iPod usage.

iTMS Canada was announced during the launch of the iPod photo, iPod Special Edition: U2, and EU iTMS on October 26. Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that the Canada localization was planned for November. Apple apologized today for missing its own deadline, and announced that the store will be launched “very soon.” No reason was given for the delay.

iTMS Canada is another choice for Canadians in legal music downloads which includes Archambault.ca (Quebecor Media Inc.), Napster.ca (The legal reincarnation of Napster), and Puretracks.com (Moontaxi Media Inc.).

The Canada localization is the 13th nation to be added to iTMS following its launch in the United States in April 2003; France, U.K., and Germany were added, in June of this year and all European Union countries, except Ireland, were added in October.

DaimlerChrysler plans to cut 13,000 jobs

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

International car company DaimlerChrysler announced today it would cut 13,000 jobs in North America. It could part ways with the loss-making business.

It also plans to cut two Chrysler plants in an attempt to make Chrysler business profitable by 2008.

About 9,000 production jobs will be cut in the U.S., 2,000 production jobs in Canada, and 2,000 salaried jobs.

“It’s hard to say if it’s enough … but the stock is reacting nicely, which is further verification that this is a favorable restructuring move and a much-needed one at Chrysler,” said chief investment officer at Solaris Asset Management, Tim Ghriskey.

Following some speculation that the companies Daimler-Benz (Mercedes-Benz) and Chrysler, which merged together in 1998 to make DaimlerChrysler, would split, chairman Dieter Zetsche denied allegations.

“We do not exclude any option in order to find the best solution for both the Chrysler Group and DaimlerChrysler.”

New Zealand runs low on 20 cent coins

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand wrote to retails banks warning them that there will be a shortage on 20 cent coins (NZ$0.20) leading up to Christmas. They have now announced that they have distributed 4.75 million new twenty cent coins in the past week alone “…close to the number issued in a typical year.”

Ten million new coins are expected to arrive in the next few days.

The Reserve Bank is wondering where all the new coins went, just five weeks after the new design was first introduced. Brian Lang, currency manager for the Reserve Bank, said: “The pattern of demand for new coins has been markedly different to that for the old coins.” He suggests that people are keeping them in jars, like the old design coins.

Some stores are already unable to give out twenty cent coins as they don’t have any according to the Newmarket Business Association.

Mr Lang said: “To put this into perspective, by 30 November, the Bank had issued almost as many 20c coins (49.6m) as 10c coins (53.0m). In the past issue of 20 cent coins would normally have been about half the amount of 10 cent coins.”

The head of Newmarket Business Association, Cameron Brewer, said: “…the Reserve Bank told us that they’d done a lot of work and that everything was going to be just fine. Well here we are just five weeks into the new coins and only days away from the Christmas rush, and the country’s running out of its own currency.”

Mr Lang said: “The Bank has sufficient supplies of 10c and 50c coins for several years’ normal issues.”

“…tens of millions of the old 20 cent pieces sit idle because they are no longer legal tender,” Mr Brewer said referring to the old ‘silver’ coins that were used before the introduction of new coins.

The Reserve Bank still doesn’t know why the pattern of demand of twenty cent coins has changed.

“… such a staggering miscalculation by the Reserve Bank should never have happened,” Mr Brewer said.

How To Dramatically Increase Your Clickbank Sales Now

Did you know you are being cheated?

This may come as a surprise to you… but if you promote any affiliate program on ClickBank (and other affilate networks), more than likely you are losing money and being ripped off.

I recently ran a split test mailing. On half of my list I used a program to “cloak” the affiliate site I was promoting, and on the other half of the list I did not. I used my actual affilate link.

To my dismay… the results were as I expected.

On the affiliate links I did not cloak, I made a total of 8 sales. The number of subscribers is not really that important, as we are not calculating the percentage of people who purchased, or the conversion rate. We are calculating the “Rip Off” rate.

Are you ready for the number of sales I made using the “cloaked” affiliate link? It was almost three times as many as the none cloaked link… 23. You read it right… I made 15 more sales on my cloaked link than I did on my regular affiliate link!

Keep in mind, the list was divided up in half… so the same number of people received the exact same offer. The only difference was on half the list, I gave my actual affiliate link… and on the other half, I gave a link that I cloaked.

For those who do not know what I mean by “cloaked” link, here is an example; http://newtraffictools.com/latest/power

Notice how the sales page of the site stays on my site, newtraffictools.com (the link is also the same product I use to cloak the sites I promote). It does not disclose the actual sales page… it is hidden. While this method may not be 100% fool proof, the numbers above speak volumes on how effective it is.

Effective to the point of an extra $900.00… that I more than likely would not have made had I not cloaked the links.

So what does this tell us?

Does it tell us people are crooks… dishonest, no count and not to be trusted? Well, not actually. It tells us that if given the opportunity, they had rather use their own affiliate link (or spouses) to buy products at a deep discount and to save money. I can’t blame them… can you?

Since this is a business (unless you do this as a hobby), then we must take the required steps to keep from being cheated.

There are a few different programs out there that allow you to cloak your affiliate links. Using the program I linked to above… you can cloak both affiliate links on your web site, and in your emails to your subscribers.

It does not matter which affilate link cloaking program you use… just begin using one today, and watch your conversions and sales go up with the same amount of effort.
