Drone smartphone app to help heart attack victims in remote areas announced

Monday, August 26, 2013

German non-profit organization Definetz announced on Friday the development of the ‘Defikopter’: a medical drone, launched by smartphone app, designed to be able to fly defibrillators to heart attack victims in remote areas quicker than an ambulance.

The Defikopter is to be launched by an app that sends out the GPS coordinates of the victim. With the ability to fly at 70km per hour in all weather conditions, the eight-armed octocopter could reach any patient within a ten kilometre radius.

The invention has received cautious praise from German medical services; the drone is still in the development and testing stage. Definetz and collaborating drone builder Height Tech have not issued any information about the release of the smartphone app or about when the drone will be available for medical services to purchase.

“We’ll have to see how much these drones can help,” German emergency services union representative Marco König told The Local. German news site Mittelbayerische reports a price tag of €20,000 (US$26,000) apiece.

One major problem Definetz faces is the law that requires all unmanned flying vehicles in Germany to be supervised. Another is that only members of the public who downloaded the app ‘just in case’ of an emergency, plus emergency workers with the app, could summon a drone.

Polish drug company Jelfa ordered to shut-down over mislabelled drugs

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Polish Prime Minister Jaros?aw Kaczy?ski has ordered the pharmaceutical company Jelfa to halt production following revelations that Jelfa had placed mislabelled medication on the market, whose use could be potentially fatal.

Jelfa distributed vials labelled as Corhydron, a hydrocortisone used to treat allergies and inflammation, but in fact containing Suxamethonium chloride, a drug normally used to cause muscle paralysis during emergency surgery.

The Health Ministry has appealed to people suffering from asthma or allergies to check their medication and return any Corhydron ampoules they possess to the pharmacy.

Polskie Radio reports that the mislabelling was discovered a month ago, but Jelfa and the Polish Health ministry did not inform of the problem.

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski ordered Jelfa to halt production until it can assure the Polish Government that it can properly manage its production.

The Polish Outlook reports that that drug companies in Poland were operating unregulated since December, 2005 as the regulations has expired. The government was putting in place new regulations.

The owner of Jelfa is AB Sanitas, the largest drug producer in neighbouring Lithuania. The shut-down has been questioned by the Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, who expressed concern over the situation and said that he wants to try to settle the issue diplomatically.

Woman killed on amusement park ride in New York

Sunday, July 1, 2007

A young woman was killed Friday night after an accident occurred on a gyrating ride at the Playland amusement park in Rye, New York in the United States. The woman, Gabriela Garin, was a worker at the amusement park, and had worked there for the past seven years.

The accident occurred near the end of Garin’s shift; as she was loading riders onto the ride. The ride’s new operator, unaware of Garin’s presence, started the ride while Garin was still on it. The new operator then noticed Garin, and shut the ride down in 20 seconds, but Garin had already been ejected from the ride and killed, according to a park spokesperson.

The ride is an attraction that spins people around in two-seat cars, inside a darkened tent to flashing lights and music.

This incident is not the first in the ride’s history. In 2004, a seven-year-old from Connecticut managed to free herself from the ride’s restraining bars, and climb onto the front edge of her seat. She fell soon after the ride started. A safety precaution was put in place after this incident, however, the spokesperson acknowledged that it was not followed when Garin was killed.

The company which owns the ride shut it down, along with two other rides it owns at the park.

This is the fourth fatality in the park’s history. The park features more than 50 rides, a pool, and a beach. It attracts more than 1 million visitors annually.

A Brief History Of Dentistry

Submitted by: Dr. Gianino

The history of dentistry can be traced back as far as the history of people on the earth, because since early primitive times men and women have been treating their teeth in whatever ways they knew how. But formal dentistry is often traced back to the early 1500s when a book was published in Germany to teach surgeons how to extract teeth, drill teeth, and install gold fillings.

Then two centuries later a French doctor, Pierre Fauchard, published the book called The Surgeon Dentist, A Treatise on Teeth (Le Chirurgien Dentiste). That was the first thorough book to address the practice of dentistry, so Dr. Fauchard is considered by most historians to be the father of modern dentistry. Soon dentistry became more or less established as a profession across Europe, and just a few years after the founding of the United States as a new nation, an English dentist named John Baker migrated to America to set up the first-ever dental practice in the USA. It is even believed that silversmith and militia member Paul Revere worked as a dentist in Boston, where he advertised his services and would fill people s cavities with the same kind of silver that he used to make his famous bowls and other household utensils.

By the 1800s dental books were being written and published by dentists across the USA, and inventors came up with two important dental products porcelain teeth and the specially designed and engineered reclining dentist chair.

The American Journal of Dental Science was established as the first dental profession journal in the world; the first dental college in the world was founded in Baltimore, and Alabama became the first state in the union to set up a state board of dentistry to regulate the profession. By 1860 there was a professional association that still presides over dentistry in the USA, the American Dental Association, and six years later the first woman to become a licensed dentist in the USA Lucy Hobbs graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery and began plying her trade. Around the same time Harvard opened the first dental school affiliated with a major university and before 1870 it had graduated the first African-American man to earn a dental degree. With nearly 30 full-fledged dental schools going strong before the 1890s, dentistry got another boost when the toothpaste tube was invented, making it much easier to dispense toothpaste and making dry tooth powders more or less obsolete. Another first happened in 1890 when a woman named Ida Gray, who was a graduate of the University of Michigan s School of Dentistry, became the first African American female dentist. The same year an American dentist published a revolutionary new book called Micro-Organisms of the Human Mouth, which helped to explain the bacterial causes of tooth decay and gum disease. As a result of the book people began taking tooth brushing and dental flossing much more seriously, and those dental hygiene habits became more common and widespread. Perhaps just as significant was the invention of X-ray equipment for dental X-rays in the late 1890s.

In the 20th century Novocain painkiller was invented, the process of casting fillings and false teeth came into existence, and the first school dedicated to the study of oral hygiene was started. Graduates began to create organized programs to teach young children about dental hygiene. By the mid-1900s dental implants were in use and public water was fluorinated. Then in the last half of the century high-speed drills were introduced, as were electric toothbrushes, home tooth whiteners, and advanced resin and polymer tooth fillings. As the 21st century neared, the FDA approved lasers for dental surgery, and now we even have computerized digital X-ray machines as well as in-office computer guided robotic machines to make replacement teeth and crowns.

Eurovision ’73 winner Anne Marie David discusses her four-decade career and the Contest, past and present

Monday, February 16, 2009

In the 1970s, she was one of the most popular female vocalists in France, and became well-known internationally. Anne Marie David, from Arles in the south of France, parlayed her initial success from playing Mary Magdalene in the French production of Jesus Christ Superstar into taking home the “grand prix” at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973. Her winning song, “Tu te reconnaîtras” (You will recognize yourself), became a Europe-wide hit that spring.

At the height of her popularity, David perfomed world tours, and even lived abroad in Turkey for a time. In 1979, she tried once again to win the Eurovision, and placed a respectable third. Her song “Je suis l’enfant soleil” (I’m a child of the sun) became similarly popular across France and in the Francophone nations.

As time went on, however, her place in the French music scene became less certain. Touring the world had taken a personal toll, and David decided to retire from music completely in 1987. However, with the help of her fan base, she was coaxed out of retirement in 2003 and is returning to a part of her life that she tried to leave, but never left her. Celebrating four decades in the music scene, David is looking forward to adventurous new projects and a newfound zest for life.

Anne Marie David corresponded with Wikinews’ Mike Halterman about her eventful career, her personal anecdotes regarding living abroad, her successes in past Eurovision contests and her grievances with the way the show is produced today. This is the second in a series of interviews with past Eurovision contestants, which will be published sporadically in the lead-up to mid-May’s next contest in Moscow.

Tips On Improving Your Pitch

If you’re interested in learning how to pitch faster, then you’re not alone. Seasoned and inexperienced players alike all want to improve their speed, and this is an area that coaches target often during training programs. When working to improve the speed of your pitch, there are several things you can do. Here are a few of them to get you started.

Long Toss Games

Playing long toss can help to improve your speed. You won’t see speedy results, but the consistency of the exercise is what helps your skills. Experienced players should aim to work back to 150-350 feet, and younger players should aim for about 150 feet. Do this three to six times per week, and you’ll start to see results in a few weeks.

Push Ups

Strength is key when you’re trying to learn how to pitch faster. Push-ups and similar exercises will develop the right muscle groups to help you with your throw. If you’re not already doing them, incorporate push-ups into your daily exercise routine. If you’re just starting out, then try to complete 2-3 reps per day. The goal is to build upper body strength without injuring yourself, so keep this in mind when you’re creating a plan. Overworking your muscles can do more harm than good. Start out slow and build up reps over time.

Work on Your Stance

The way that you position your body has a great effect on how you pitch the ball. Work on your stance and find a position that you’re comfortable with. This may go against what traditional trainers will tell you, as many of them follow strict techniques that they teach to their players. You have to be positioned properly, but that stance should also be natural to you. If you’re having trouble in this area, work with a trainer that can help you develop your positioning in a natural, unforced manner.

When learning how to pitch faster, you can improve your skills by playing simple long toss games and working back several feet per session. In addition to doing this, you have to build strength in your upper body. This will add some serious power to your throws. Note that your improvements will be gradual, and this means consistency with your training techniques. Most player’s practice new skills for several weeks before they see any results worth talking about. By practicing every day, and building those muscles, you can expect to pitch faster and with more accuracy.

If you want to learn how to pitch faster, then you need a trainer that knows the techniques to help you reach your goals.

Drug-resistant staph deaths surpass AIDS in the United States

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug-resistant strain of bacteria, killed nearly 19,000 Americans in 2005 alone, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That is more people than were killed by AIDS in the United States. More than 94,000 Americans were afflicted with MRSA infections in 2005.

Although the supergerm, or superbug, is primarily found in hospitals, a growing number of cases have been contracted at public gyms and schools. In Moneta, Virginia, a high school senior died from an infection that spread to his kidney, liver, lungs and heart. In Bedford County, where Moneta is located, school officials have reported five cases of the Methicillin-resistant strain of the Staph bacteria. County officials closed the schools to clean them.

“Certainly, MRSA now has to be viewed as a very important target for prevention and control,” said Dr. David A. Talan, an infectious diseases specialist at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
