Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

Pennsylvania state trooper found guilty of first-degree murder

Friday, March 20, 2009

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.

Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.

“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.

When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”

Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.

“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.

Most financial aid counselors, teachers and parents mean well when they tell you to apply for Fasfa and government aid. But in reality, they have no clue about how things work anymore. These traditional resources used to work, 10 to 20yrs ago but today they are overwhelmed with all the people entering school and older people going back to school. This makes it impossible for you to get the money you need, and it leaves you to resorting to getting school loans that leave graduates in debt for an average of 30 to 40yrs.Not Good! If you are just willing to think different and learn how to get free money for school, from non-traditional sources you would be way better of! Here is one very effective way you can use this week, to get the college funding you need fast Im talking about online funding giveaways and contests. Now, before you start forming your own opinion, hear me out These are nothing like lotteries or empty promise companies, that charge you just to enter for a chance to win something. There are tons of websites all over the place that offer money for school, that you register to win. What you end up doing is filling out surveys on how you think, how you spend your time online, what mosts interests you online and what are your top visited websites. They then take this information and sell it to third parties for market research. This helps them structure their advertising and products. So you buy more. In turn, they pay a fee to the website that sold them the information. This is how they can provide money for your school funding for free. Very simple, but most students just don’t have the know-how to think outside of what everybody is telling them to do.

FAA orders review of Boeing 787 Dreamliners following week of incidents

Sunday, January 13, 2013

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered a review Friday into the design and manufacture of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, following five incidents in five days involving the aircraft and two Japanese airlines.

On Monday, an electrical fire broke out aboard a Japan Airlines 787 at Boston’s Logan International Airport, when a battery pack which powers the auxiliary power unit, for when the plane is on the ground, caught fire. The fire was discovered by maintenance workers after passengers and crew disembarked following their flight from Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

The next day, a separate Japan Airlines 787, also at Logan International Airport, heading to Tokyo, suffered a fuel leak that spilled around 40 gallons, which was spotted by the crew of the aircraft taxiing behind them. “That Japan Air may know it, but they’ve got fuel or something spilling out the outboard left wing. Quite a bit,” said the pilot of aircraft behind them on local air traffic control frequencies.

Wednesday, in Japan, an All Nippon Airways 787, the launch customer for the aircraft, cancelled a flight after a brake problem was reported.

Earlier Friday, two All Nippon Airways suffered separate incidents in Japan. An oil leak was noticed in the engine after one aircraft had landed in Miyazaki, coming from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Another flight, flying between Haneda Airport and Matsuyama said the pilot’s side window in the cockpit suffered a crack.

The FAA in a statement said “In light of a series of recent events, the FAA will conduct a comprehensive review of the Boeing 787 critical systems, including the design, manufacture and assembly.” Further adding, “The purpose of the review is to validate the work conducted during the certification process and further ensure that the aircraft meets the FAA’s high level of safety.”

According to the statement, “The review will also examine how the electrical and mechanical systems interact with each other.” The Boeing 787 relies more on electrical, as opposed to mechanical, systems than past aircraft from the manufacturer including having electronics operate hydraulic pumps and using electric brakes. Large portions of the plane’s structure use lightweight carbon fiber composite instead of more traditional metal airframe.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, “The safety of the traveling public is our top priority […] This review will help us look at the root causes and do everything we can to safeguard against similar events in the future.”

“We are confident that the aircraft is safe. But we need to have a complete understanding of what is happening,” said newly sworn-in FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta. “We are conducting the review to further ensure that the aircraft meets our high safety standards.”

Boeing released a statement saying, “[The company] is confident in the design and performance of the 787. It is a safe and efficient airplane. The airplane has logged 50,000 hours of flight and there are more than 150 flights occurring daily.”

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Employ Reliable Injury Lawyers For Mishaps

 • Get More Information Here:

Submitted by: Janet Marshall

Whilst an individual is recovering from a trauma from an injury recruiting an accident lawyer could be extremely advantageous, but selecting the top personal injury lawyer would be relatively strenuous. Employing the best attorney could be the difference between winning an injury lawsuit and losing hard earned cash. What are various essential aspects to look for? This isn’t inevitably given that you are submitting a claim ahead of the day is over. This simply means you require an expert to examine whether there are reasons for a court action, and if so, whether a lawsuit is the best choice available for you. You do not need to deal with settlement here, since most initial visits with these lawyers are available at no cost.

Appointing an injury lawyer hinging primarily upon classified ads in a magazine isn’t preferred. Even as an advertisement could present lots of excellent information such as an attorney’s certificates or education, it offers almost no essential information about how simple the lawyer is, how good the lawyer uses the time, or how effective the lawyer is doing work in his domain of know how. A lot of these personal injuries may be critical as they may often lead to loss of life. For that reason, a large number of the personal injury litigation’s require the pay out of considerable sum of cash, and only an experienced injury attorney’s understanding to effectively take care of these kinds of major claims may enable you to get that amount.

It’s suggested to recognize this grouping since it influences in assessing the outcome of any court case. Attorneys need to be hired dependent upon the exact claim involved. All legal proceedings are distinctive and so, requires the talents and skills that is garnered only with working on area of specialty. The moment your entitlement is affirmed the lawyer will file an injury case and would act favoring you to recover compensation and can file litigation for accident benefits too. For instance, a work associated trauma or disease will help you receive laborers’ compensation.

You wouldn’t find any hazards in working with an attorney when you’re thinking of registering damage lawsuits. Getting the help of an injury lawyer might result in a earlier and larger reimbursement. Particularly, if you plan to represent yourself, you can be exposed to extensive court costs and considerable reduction in wages. Hoping for tips of other attorneys that aren’t associated to the individual being appointed is indeed a smart thought to be aware of the know-how of that attorney when it’s about contending your lawsuit.

Mishaps could take place to any place and anytime, the mishap could crop up resulting from your own mistake, or often it will be caused by the mistake of others. It’s been witnessed that the majority of trauma incidents for instance slip and fall accidents, dog bites, non injury vehicle collisions get overlooked. The accident attorney re-investigates your claim with caution to prepare an effective and legitimate lawsuit to make it easier to have justice and payment for the troubles and losses. Take note, I am not a lawyer, this is not a legal advice, it is my personal belief, but for sincere lawful advice, go to gluckstein website instantly.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Employee Lockers For Factory Restroom Design

By Patricia Holland

Architects can choose from a number of plastic employee lockers for factory restroom design. Plastic is recommended over metal because of its superior longevity. In most factory environments, there are all sorts of airborne agents that will corrode metal. Many factories are also located near the sea, and salt air definitely will corrode metal. Consider as well the cost of a severely damaged metal locker, or a metal locker that loses its paint job, and you can easily see how something that appears to be cost-effective at face value is not really cost-effective in the long run.

Contrast this with plastic employee lockers that are built with plastic pieces that are contiguously colored throughout. This means the plastic itself is colored instead of being painted after production. A storage unit made from this material will never need to be repainted. With over 30 colors available, it is also much easier to match the unit to interior decor. This may not be important in some heavy-duty industrial facilities, but in other facilities that house both a production floor and executive offices, factory restroom design can finally feature a higher level of aesthetics to impress the higher-ups.

Different types of employee lockers can accommodate a wide range of industry types. Many specialized jobs require protective clothing that is better stored on premises than taken home every night by the employee. Such items as welder’s masks, construction helmets, work boots, gloves, and protective vests can all be retrieved by workers at the beginning of their shifts and stored again at the end of their shifts. When plastic lockers and employee showers are in every factory bathroom, changing in and out of work clothes can be done quickly without late starts on daily production.

Just this slight improvement in daily efficiency will add up over time to bring a great return on investment to any organization willing to invest in plastic lockers today.

Employee lockers for factory restroom designs come in a variety of sizes and configurations to suit particular storage needs. Some, such as bench lockers, are ideal for storing tools and special protective gear. Other units which feature what we normally picture in our minds when we think of a locker are designed to neatly hang day clothes and to store personal items.

This is not only a benefit to workers on the production floor alone. Many times, executives, clients, and investors come to tour a facility to inspect its progress. These individuals will need to wear protective clothing, ideally, if they are going to be near certain areas or materials otherwise deemed hazardous. Incorporating high-quality employee lockers into every factory restroom design makes facility tours of this nature more common and much safer than ever before.

Some organizations have hesitated to invest in lockers because they worry about liability resultant from theft. While this is a valid concern, modern lockers are built with maximum security in mind. All locker types are manufactured to accommodate a variety of lock types. However, for factory restroom designs where employees will no doubt be storing valuables, it is recommended that lockers be custom ordered with built-in combination locks or built-in key locks.
