A new study amongst doctors in the United States on the use of placebos—pills with no medical effect—shows that almost half of the questioned practitioners prescribe placebos, most of them within the last year.
The majority of 466 faculty physicians at Chicago-area medical schools interviewed by a research group of the University of Chicago stated that placebos are useful to calm a patient down or to respond to demands for medication that the doctor disagrees with, i.e. “to get the patient to stop complaining”.
96 percent of the physicians surveyed believe that placebos can have therapeutic effects. Close to 40 percent stated that placebos could benefit patents physiologically as well as mentally.
Twelve percent of surveyed physicians think that placebos should be banned from clinical practice. Among the doctors who prescribed them, one in five said they outright lied to patients by claiming a placebo was medication. But more often the physicians came up with ways to explain like that “this may help you but I’m not sure how it works.”
The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of U.S. doctors and medical students, tells its members that “[p]hysicians may use placebos for diagnosis or treatment only if the patient is informed of and agrees to its use.” The research, published in Journal of General Internal Medicine this week, is the first major U.S. study of doctors on the use of placebos since 1979.

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.
Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”
Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.
Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the fat burning and cardio benefits of Tabata Training read on. I will give you a quick once over of what Tabata’s are all about.
Tabata training is a very intense form of Interval training. Normally Tabata training is done with one exercise. What you do is you do as many reps as you can in 20 seconds then you rest for 10 seconds and repeat the eventual goal is to do a minimum of 8 sets.
Doesn’t sound all that tough right? Think again Tabata Training is a tough workout but probably the most effective and time efficeint fat burning and cardio workout there is.
If you are new to working out or are in poor shape do not think you can jump into doing a full Tabata Training workout.
First things first get a physical checkup! You will be placing heavy demands on your cardio system doing tabata’s.
Break into tabata training gradually.
Start with doing one or two sets of tabata two to three times a week. Tabata training is again as many reps as you can do for 20 seconds.
What you want to do is one of two things:
1 – Have a clock set to where you can watch the second hand for your twenty seconds while you count your reps or
2 – Have someone time you and count your reps for you. This is the best way so you can pay attention to using proper exercise form especially as you begin to tire.
Tabata Training The Sumo Deadlift and High Pull Combo
You are going to need a barbell ( you can also use a kettlebell or two dumbells or a medicine ball) to do the Sumo Deadlift high Pull.
What we are doing here is 2 different exercises but combinning them as one.
The Sumo Deadlift
Position feet under bar with very wide stance. Squat down and grasp bar between legs with a shoulder width or slightly narrower mixed grip. Lift bar by extending hips and knees to full extension. Pull shoulders back at top of lift if rounded. Throughout lift keep hips low, shoulders high, arms and back straight. Knees should point same direction as feet throughout movement. Keep bar close to body to improve mechanical leverage.
The High Pull
Stand over the barbell with the balls of the feet positioned under the bar slightly wider apart than hip width. Squat down and grip the bar with an over hand grip slightly wider than shoulder width. Position the shoulders over the bar with the back arched tightly. Arms are straight with elbows pointed along the bar.
Pull the bar up off the floor by extending the hips and knees. As the bar reaches the knees vigorously raise the shoulders while keeping the barbell close to the thighs, jump upward extending the body. Flex elbows out to the sides, pulling bar up to neck height.
Combining The Sumo Deadlift and High Pull:
Get yourself into position as if you are doing the Sumo (use the narrow grip as instructed for the sumo) once you stand erect go immediatly into the High Pull and return to starting position repeat.
You are not going to use heavy weight’s for this remember we are going to do these as a Tabata training fat burning workout we are not bodybuilding. So use a weight that will make you work but not to heavy as to be able to get out your required reps.
Tabata Training Efficeint and Effective I love Tabata Training and the Sumo Deadlift High Pull combo gives you a total body fat burning workout. Your working practically every muscle group and cardio your metabolism will be racing long after this workout is over for continued fat burning.
Practice with an empty bar so you get your form down before adding weight.
If you have ever tried using tabata training you know how tough and rewarding it can be. The cardio fat fat burning benefits are enormous. As with any form of exercise you get out of it what you put into it. To get the true fat loss and cardio benefits you must go at each of your workouts with an extremely high intensity level.
Just going through the motions and giving a half hearted effort will give you minimal results at best. As I mentioned work up to a full Tabata workout. only by progression to you improve. As I mentioned work up to a full Tabata workout. only by progression will you change your body composition.

Duncan Hunter, a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from California and the House Armed Services Committee chairman, said Thursday that the incident involving Marines firing on unarmed Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha on 19 November 2005 will be subject to Congressional hearings as soon the criminal investigation is completed.
“If there were problems in the chain of command, if there was a cover up, if there was anything that wasn’t reported, let the chips fall where they may but don’t presume anything,” Mr. Hunter said.
The incident is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Multi-National Forces Iraq. No official investigation report has been released yet.
Some military commanders have said that it appears the Marines did not follow the rules of engagement. “This report is going to be ugly,” one commander said.
John Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat and member of the House of Representatives, said earlier on Wednesday that what happened near the Iraqi town of Haditha was “much worse than was reported in Time magazine”. On March 21, Time reported that “U.S. Marines killed 15 Iraqi civilians in their homes”, including “seven women and three children”. Time also reported that U.S. troops were responding to an IED and insurgent fire.
Murtha, referring to preliminary military investigation reports, said, “There was no firefight. […] There was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops over-reacted because of the pressure on them. And they killed innocent civilians in cold blood.” He also said that the civilian death toll was 24 and not 15 as reported by Time magazine.
According to the New York Times, Murtha stated that he himself did not read official findings of the military inquiry, but had been told about the inquiry by commanders due to his background of military service and connections to its workings.
Marine Corps Central Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Sean Gibson would neither confirm nor deny Murtha’s charges.
Duncan Hunter said in response to Murtha on Friday “I don’t want to see these troops who have done such a magnificent job end up being portrayed in the American media by what comes out of the Haditha investigation”.

Protestors in Greece, rallying against austerity measures, have clashed with police in the capital of Athens.
Some people participating in the rally — attended by thousands of teachers and students — threw stones at riot police, who responded by employing pepper spray, although the BBC described the protests as being generally peaceful. Demonstrators say that a recent austerity proposal, which is to include pension cuts and an increase in taxes, will adversely affect the education sector.
Teachers, along with hospital workers and public servants, have started a two-day strike over the measures. Also present were 150 members of the armed forces, who protested having their bonuses lowered.
Meanwhile, earlier on Tuesday, approximately a hundred demonstrators with the Communist Party broke through locks at the Acropolis and hung up banners saying: “Peoples of Europe — Rise Up”.
Communist Member of Parliament Nikos Papaconstantinou commented: “We want to send a message to the farthest reaches of Greece and Europe. Similar measures that eliminate social security are taken across Europe. But popular anger will rattle imperialist organisations.”
The austerity plan comes shortly after the Greek government said it would introduce spending cuts to obtain a loan package by the EU and International Monetary Fund, aimed at helping Greece recover from a financial crisis.

There are many auditions for new Disney channel shows being done in a year. This is because Disney Channel is always introducing new shows for viewers. To find out about these auditions, you have to be very keen. Keep checking the websites that have the listings for example. Alternatively, hire an agent who will do this for you. The agent will get you the auditions and inform you about the roles, time and dates to ensure that you don’t miss them. The agent also may also have inside information; he may be able to get you an audition even before it is advertised in websites.
Since these are new shows, you need to carry out adequate research before the audition. Find out about the role you are auditioning for and get all the information that you can get about it. If you research your role in advance, this will help get into character more easily during your audition.
When going for auditions for new Disney channel shows, you have to be very punctual. It is actually better to arrive ahead of time instead on exactly on time. Be there even twenty minutes early; this will impress the casting directors. It will also help you to compose yourself and prepare to perform. Ensure that you are well rested before the audition. Don’t over rehearse on the actual day for the audition, save your energy for when you get on stage.
Ensure that you dress appropriately. Don’t be indecent or scantily dressed. Use your skills to land the roles. Dressing suggestively will work against you instead of boosting your chances. Wear something comfortable and don’t wear a costume unless you have been instructed to.
The first thing you do when you get to the auditions for new Disney channel shows is to sign with the casting assistant before anything else. While waiting for your turn to audition, you can go over your lines quietly. Don’t be loud or rude to anyone. To calm your nerves, meditate on your scene or do breathing exercises. Don’t smoke or chew gum as you wait. This is a job interview just like another interview, you need to be presentable.
When on stage, talk naturally, you don’t need to shout, just be audible. If you aren’t sure which direction to face, ask the casting director especially if there are no cameras. Be confident and deliver a convincing performance. This is not the time to second guess yourself as this will reflect in your performance. If you make a mistake, ask the director if you can start again. Don’t panic, cry or curse, just take a few minutes to recollect your thoughts and try again.
Once you are through with your auditions for new Disney channel shows, calmly thank the director and exit the room but don’t go home yet. Wait for at least two minutes just in case the casting director wants to call you back in again. Always remember to give an updated resume during the audition complete with your contacts be it email address or telephone numbers. This will help the casting team to get in touch with you in case of anything.

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail in the first week of May to Philip Sturm, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Minneapolis, Minnesota set to take place November 2 alongside that for city council, two seats of the Board of Estimate and Taxation and nine seats of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Sturm discussed information about his campaign and policies with Wikinews.
Sturm is a veteran who served from 1999 to 2003 in the US Marine Corps, stationed on Okinawa Island, Japan before performing operations in the US invasion of Afghanistan and 2003 invasion of Iraq. According to his web site, Sturm has a career in “manufacturing and operations”. According to his web site’s ‘civic vitae’ section, Sturm was co-chair for the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party), District 62 in 2005 and a member of Veterans for Kerry.
He was a volunteer special deputy in Hennepin County, Minnesota, a member of the 9-1-1 emergency helpline workgroup for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), the 9/11 and GWOT (Global War on Terrorism) Remembrance Task Force with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and the racial equity fund with H.B. Fuller.
According to Minneapolis’ official website Jacob Frey won the last election in 2017 receiving 44.69% of the vote in the final round of voting. KSTP-TV reported Frey announced his run for re-election January 21. Sturm registered his candidacy on March 22.
