How to Become a Pilates Instructor

by

Heather Hunter

Pilates is one of the most successful and effective aerobic exercise programs that exist today. Developed in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, this unique and highly effective exercise program has been updated over the decades until today when it is considered a highly advanced, yet very straightforward approach to effective aerobics exercise.

For most people, simply enjoying the Pilates routines has been the core of their exercise program. But many want to go further to get Pilates certification and teach others as instructors, either in personal one-to-one sessions or in large classes. The Pilates certification program does require combining the original techniques developed over 90 years ago with modern advances that maximize this intense, yet highly effective exercise program.

Typical Pilates teacher training Kentucky residents would experience basically consists of taking a comprehensive 450+ hour course which instructs on every aspect of Pilates training. For Pilates certification, such knowledge is required given the vast extent of how Pilates is utilized in various types of exercises. Mastering these techniques will require passing this course which includes the fundamental Pilates philosophy as well as some of the following;

-Full Repertoire on the Pilates Mat

-Universal Reformer

-Trapeze/Cadillac Table

-Combo/Wunda Chair

-How to assess clients and protocol of alignment.

-Understanding all Pilates terminology.

-Small apparatus skills

-Creative training/programming skills

-Cueing skills, particularly effective verbal communication

-Understanding the ethics of Pilates and training students.

-Recognizing specific injuries and special circumstances.

These represent just part of what is needed in going through the Pilates certification program. However, as daunting as the number of hours and this partial list may seem, for those who are well versed in Pilates the real challenge is the ability to maintain focus and incorporate the additional learning into your Pilates experience.

Obtaining Pilates certification means going through the rigorous course in order to be fully prepared to take the exams as well as pass other requirements after you have been certified. Your training will involve many hours in the classroom as well as outside hours which will include being on location to work in Pilates classes.

Plus, having instructors who have years of experience means you can grow at your own pace and learn from the best while obtaining the basic knowledge you need to pass Pilates teacher training Kentucky residents have used for years in getting what they need in order to fulfill the requirements of Pilates certification.

However, in order for the training to be effective you ll need to dedicate yourself over this period of time to absorb the knowledge necessary to pass the exams and become fully versed in the precise Pilates techniques so you can share that knowledge with your students. A part of this understanding goes beyond Kentucky as Pilates courses in different parts of the country have incorporated unique techniques that will have to be leaned if you decide to leave the state for employment.

Training for your Pilates certification is not easy, but can be highly rewarding and can accelerate your career in exercise training for these unique, highly effective techniques.

British conductor Edward Downes and wife die in double assisted suicide

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

British conductor Sir Edward Downes and his wife Joan took their lives at a Swiss assisted suicide clinic on Friday, July 10, 2009, according to a statement from their family. Lady Downes, 74, was afflicted with terminal cancer, and Sir Edward, 85, was nearly blind with increasing hearing difficulties. These disabilities had forced him to give up conducting. Having no religious beliefs, the couple decided against holding a funeral.

The statement read, “After 54 happy years together, they decided to end their own lives rather than continue to struggle with serious health problems. They died peacefully, and under circumstances of their own choosing, with the help of the Swiss organisation, Dignitas, in Zurich.”

Many who knew the couple as friends said that Sir Edward was not terminally ill, but wanted to die with his wife, who he had been with for more than 50 years.

Sir Edward Downes’s children, in an interview with The London Evening Standard, said they escorted their parents to Zurich, and on that Friday, they watched in tears as their parents consumed “a small quantity of clear liquid,” and then proceeded to lie down together, holding hands.

“Within a couple of minutes they were asleep, and died within 10 minutes,” said their 41 year old son, Caractacus Downes.

Sir Edward was well respected in the operatic and orchestral worlds and was particularly noted for his performances of British and Russian music and of Verdi, conducting 25 of the composer’s 28 operas. He had a long association with the Royal Opera House, where he conducted for more than 50 seasons in succession. This did not stop him from refusing to conduct a series of performances of Verdi’s Nabucco there as he was “out of sympathy” with the adventurous production. His approach to conducting was similarly conservative. He wrote “The duty of a conductor should be to present… a faithful and accurate account of the composer’s music as he wrote it, disregarding any subsequent ‘interpretations’, ‘meanings’, or political agendas that may have been attached to it by others.”

It was on Friday, 28 September, 1973, that Sir Edward conducted the opening public performance at the Sydney Opera House, a staging of Prokofiev’s War and Peace by Opera Australia, of which he was musical director. Downes also served as chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Orchestra and principal conductor of the BBC Philharmonic.

The family reported that Lady Downes “started her career as a ballet dancer and subsequently worked as a choreographer and TV producer, before dedicating the last years of her life to working as our father’s personal assistant.”

The Metropolitan Police have announced that Greenwich CID are investigating the circumstances of the couple’s deaths. Assisting a suicide is illegal in the United Kingdom.

Over 100 people who wished to die have made the journey from Britain to Switzerland to take advantage of the clinical services that Dignitas offers. British police have investigated many of the resulting deaths, but no family member has yet been prosecuted for helping relatives negotiate with Dignitas and travel to Switzerland. Debbie Purdy, a woman with multiple sclerosis, attempted last year to obtain a ruling from the English High Court that family members would not be prosecuted for helping someone use the service, and in particular that her husband would not be charged should she decide to use Dignitas in future. The court refused as it believed that such clarification is the responsibility of parliament and not the judiciary.

Last week the House of Lords rejected a proposal by former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer to allow people to help someone with a terminal illness travel to a country where assisted suicide is legal.

Four Russian stores hit with gas attacks

Monday, December 26, 2005

In Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, four gas attacks left more than 70 people ill. Devices with wires, timers, and glass vials of a gas determined on scene to be methyl mercaptan were found in outlets of Makisdom, a home improvement chain store. The chemical is both naturally occurring and manufactured and is used as an oderant for detection of propane or natural gas leaks.

Store officials have said that they had received threats that sales would be disrupted before New Year’s. Russians traditionally give gifts on the holiday. Police officials said they believed a commercial dispute or a prank not terrorism.

The local emergency hospital was overflowed from the influx of ill people from the attacks. Valentina Matviyenko, Governer of St. Petersburg, said that those who sought medical help were not suffering any further medical problems.

A custodian at one of the stores found the devices and alerted police. The devices were found at another store with their vials broken. The devices in the two other stores were carried outside by employees and covered with buckets. The police explosives experts defused them.

American Samoa received eight minutes warning before 2009 tsunami

Friday, September 24, 2010

People in American Samoa were given only eight minutes warning that a tsunami, which killed 32 people in the unincorporated territory, resulting from the 2009 Samoa earthquake, was approaching. A report published by the United States Congress admits that the warning was issued sixteen minutes after the 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Samoa. The tsunami killed nearly 200 people in American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga.

The report, written by the National Research Council, describes the length of time between the earthquake and the initial tsunami warning being issued as “relatively long”, and states that the standard time for such a warning to be issued to be around two minutes. The study also revealed that one third of tsunami sensors are not working at any given time.

John Orcutt, a [seismologist and head of the committee that wrote the report, described the delay as a “major concern”, but he also said that “a large number of people” in American Samoa “didn’t understand and there were lives that were lost because people simply didn’t take the action to get away from the shore when they felt this huge earthquake. People have to understand the signs of a tsunami and head to higher ground.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, whose purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities, and the Government of American Samoa did not respond to e-mails regarding the news.

The study also notes that people living in other coastal cities around the world are at risk of being unprepared for tsunamis that arrive soon after the earthquake occurs, stating that in many places, warnings might not be issued in time. “If the source were so close to shore that only minutes were available before the tsunami reached the coast, the public would need to recognize natural [signs of a tsunami approaching].” The report states that when they fear a tsunami is imminent, people should know to evacuate even “without official warnings.”

The report warns that because tsunamis are so rare, people living near the coast do not know what to do, but it also criticises authorities for not informing citizens of how to react when a tsunami is approaching. “Everybody thought that the tsunami was a single wave, and once the expected landfall time came and left, they thought it was over,” said Costas Synolakis, who is director of the Tsunami Research Center at the University of Southern California, and one of the report’s authors. He continued, “In fact, tsunamis are a series of waves that can last for three to four hours.”

He said that the United States must take action, training first responders in low-lying coastal areas, and adding more tsunami sensors to give advance warning of approaching waves. Synolakis added that, after receiving warning that there may have been a tsunami on the way after the Chile earthquake earlier this year, the response of firefighters at the Port of Los Angeles was poor because they were unfamiliar with how to deal with such a threat.

In the capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago, the tsunami measured 1.57 meters in height. The superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa Mike Reynolds reported four waves as high as six meters. People who experienced the quake said it was long, lasting from 90 seconds to three minutes. “Pago Pago city streets were strewn with overturned vehicles, cars, and debris. Some buildings located only slightly above sea level were completely destroyed by the waves, and power in some locations is not expected to be restored for up to a month,” Wikinews reported at the time.

Didi Afuafi, 28, who was riding on a bus in American Samoa when the tsunami struck, described her experiences. “I was scared. I was shocked. All the people on the bus were screaming, crying and trying to call their homes. We couldn’t get on cell phones. The phones just died on us. It was just crazy,” she said. “This is going to be talked about for generations.” U.S. President Barack Obama said of the disaster: “My deepest sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones and many people who have been affected by the earthquake and the tsunami.”

The people of American Samoa will, next Wednesday, according to a press release by the government, “hold island-wide services to honor the memories of the 34 loved ones who lost their lives” during the tsunami. Church services will be held at 6:00 a.m., followed at 6:48 a.m.—the time when the earthquake occured—thirty-two bells will be rung in memory of those who perished.

Science Of Botox Training by Timmy VicWhen individuals sign up for Botox training with Elite Aesthetic, Medical and Business Training, they are getting the best Botox training anywhere in North America. For their thorough Botox training, Elite ensures that all training candidates leave with a comprehensive knowledge of the science behind this revolutionary wrinkle treatment. Their Botox training includes all details of what Botox can do, including side effects, safety precautions, and who should not be treated with Botox. When dealing with dermal fillers, it is paramount to understand who they are for, and who should not partake in their use. Elite’s Botox training provides all the pertinent details for both practitioner and patient. For instance, few people realize that Botox is actually botulinum toxin, which can cause botulism, a serious medical condition. Proper Botox training allows the practitioner to explain this to their patients, as well as the benefits. When Botox is administered locally for cosmetic purposes, it relaxes facial muscles in order to smooth out moderate to severe wrinkles. This is the goal for most patients, but they must be aware of potential side effects and dangers. Botox training covers these areas extensively, giving trainees the in-depth knowledge of what Botox is, and what harm could potentially occur if it is misused, or administered to an individual who is at risk of developing side effects.Another important part of Botox training is to see it in action, live and in person. To understand the science is to witness it firsthand, and Elite Aesthetic Botox training includes this as part of their renowned Botox training. The most important aspect in understanding how Botox works is to see it administered to live models. Elite’s Botox training includes a four hour segment where each trainee is given the opportunity to inject models with Botox, ensuring that protocol and procedure are in accordance with how the drug must be administered. Even though Botox is used for cosmetic purposes in this arena, Elite Botox training makes the distinction between Botox uses for medical ailments and cosmetic purposes. Their Botox training is specific in this, giving trainees the opportunity for hands-on Botox training, along with the necessary knowledge to ensure the well being of their patients. It is important to remind patients that Botox was originally developed to treat serious muscle ailments. While it does provide amazing cosmetic benefits for most people who use it, they need to be informed that there may be certain risks involved. Only an aesthetician with the proper Botox training will be able to convey this to their patients. Elite ensures that once their training seminar is completed, all trainees will be well versed in the science of Botox, and will be fully qualified to share that knowledge with their patients. For anyone considering Botox as an optional cosmetic procedure, nothing can be more important that full understanding of the science behind the drug. For more information, including trainee testimonial videos, please visit Elite’s website at eliteambt.Elite AMBT provides Aesthetic Medical Training to customers across Canada and the US while also offering webinars and online training. Kentucky faith-based agency under fire for religious coercion

Saturday, May 5, 2007

A lawsuit filed by a former employee of Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children (now Sunrise Children’s Services) and four other tax-payers, has shed light on the possibility of religious coercion by the organization. The lawsuit challenges the faith-based agency’s eligibility for state funds.

Specifically, interviews of children conducted by the state of Kentucky have revealed complaints from some of the children. Mainly, children who said they were Catholic, Pentecostal, Jehovah’s Witnesses or atheist voiced complaints in the interviews.

“They tried to more [or] less force me to become a Christian,” said one child in an exit interview. “I just felt I was being pressured into giving up my religion.”

Another child reported s/he was “not allowed to choose when or when not to attend a religious service,” per the interview, and was told “‘to do’ some type of Bible study during that time or get consequences.”

Both the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Sunrise say there is a strict policy against proselytizing in the program and that it does not prevent children from practising their individual faiths.

They also stress that these complaints number merely a “handful” among the approximately 1,500 children that are served by the faith-based agency.

“If a child says, ‘I don’t want to go to the Baptist church,’ then the child does not go,” Jonathan Goldberg, the state’s attorney, said. Some children might have mistankenly believed they were forced to go, he added.

The plaintiffs are seeking to have the interviews unsealed, at least in the cases where the child is now 18 years of age or older. The state and Sunrise argue they need to be kept confidential.

The lawsuit originated with Alicia Pedreira, who was fired in 2000. She alleges her firing was direct result of Sunrise (then Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children) finding out she is a lesbian.

Sunrise Children’s Services provides residential programs and foster care homes for children that have suffered abuse or neglect. Since 2001, Kentucky has paid Sunrise US$61 million to provide the services for children who would otherwise be in direct state custody.

In 2001, the state did find cause for action against one of Sunrise’s homes to fix “a coercive religious environment” where staff members confirmed that church attendance was required.

With accusations of undue pressure by a Christian agency funded by the state, the Sunrise case bears some similitude to the lawsuit against Iowa for paying Chuck Colson’s evangelical agency to run part of its prison.

Last June, U.S. District Judge Robert W. Pratt strongly reprimanded and ruled against Iowa’s use of a Christian social service agency to administer its prison. Judge Pratt stated: “For all practical purposes, the state has literally established an Evangelical Christian congregation within the walls of one of its penal institutions… There are no adequate safeguards present, nor could there be, to ensure that state funds are not being directly spent to indoctrinate Iowa inmates.”

The Iowa ruling is pending appeal.

Critics point to both of these cases as failures of George W. Bush’s faith-based services initiative. The program is often seen as conflicting with the tradition of separation of church and state in the United States.

US House committee approves daylight saving time amendment

Thursday, April 7, 2005

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee passed an amendment on Wednesday to extend daylight saving time by two months. The bipartisan measure is sponsored by Representative Fred Upton, Republican of Michigan, and Representative Ed Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts.

“The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use,” Representative Ed Markey said. Markey also supported the measure by pointing out the business benefits. “There’s more economic activity, because people feel they can walk around safely,” he said.

“Extending daylight-saving time makes sense, especially with skyrocketing energy costs,” Rep. Fred Upton said.

The bill extends daylight saving time to begin on the first Sunday in March and to end on the last Sunday in November. Daylight saving time currently begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the first Sunday in October.

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that extending daylight saving time would save 10,000 barrels of oil per day. The United States consumes approximately 20 million barrels of oil per day.

The House is planning to approve the energy bill to which the amendment was attached in several weeks. Several other amendments to the bill are still being debated.
