US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

Utah bill requiring divine design education withdrawn by Senator Chris Buttars

Monday, July 18, 2005

Utah Senator Chris Buttars has decided not to introduce a bill requiring the teaching of “divine design” in Utah schools, at least for this year. Buttars withdrew after State Board of Education director Patti Harrington assured him that Utah public school curriculum does not teach that man descended from apes.

Buttars had hoped his divine design proposal would escape the controversy of creationism or intelligent design. “The only people who will be upset about this are atheists,” he stated on June 6 when he announced his intention to run the bill.

Utah is home to the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints also known as the Mormon Church. On the surface it would seem Utah would be a likely scene of intense religious pressure in public schools over the teaching of evolution. But unlike states with a strong Christian conservative presence, Utah’s LDS leaders have avoided some of the more contentious separation state and church battles.

On the topic of divine design, official LDS church spokesmen have been largely silent at least in public. But with more than 90% of the legislature made up of members of the LDS faith, few in Utah would deny the influence of the church on public policy.

Groups on both sides of the issue are gearing up for what many consider an inevitable fight. The ACLU of Utah has posted a paper on divine design on its web site (http://www.acluutah.org). The Eagle Forum which wields significant policital power in Utah has expressed its support for Buttars proposed legislation.

Illinois law means end to horse slaughter in US

Friday, May 25, 2007

Legislation banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption in Illinois, was signed into law today by Governor Rod Blagojevich.

“It’s past time to stop slaughtering horses in Illinois and sending their meat overseas. I’m proud to sign this law that finally puts an end to this practice,” Governor Blagojevich said.

Most states in the United States have already outlawed horse slaughter. Illinois was the last state with an operating slaughterhouse. At the beginning of the year there were also two slaughterhouses in Texas. That state has had a ban since 1949, but it was not being enforced. A lawsuit ended with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit declining to hear further appeals, forcing them to shut down in March.

Sid Miller, a State Representative in Texas and the chairperson for the House Agriculture and Livestock Committee, has sponsored legislation to repeal the 1949 ban. However, his last proposal died in committee.

“People were selling horses not knowing that they were being used and treated like livestock and ended up on the slaughter room floor,” said Illinois Senator John Cullerton. “This bill will ensure that using horses for the purpose of human consumption is illegal throughout the State of Illinois just as it is in 48 other states in the nation.”

“There is no domestic market for horsemeat and, therefore, no need for this practice to continue in Illinois,” State Agriculture Director Chuck Hartke said. “Meat from the slaughtered horses is being shipped overseas to places like Belgium, France and Japan.”

Wayne Pacelle of the Humane Society of the United States told CBS News that 100,800 horses were slaughtered in the United States, last year, with a further 30,000 horses being sent to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

Opponents of the new law say horses should be considered to be in the same category as cattle or other livestock. They say that horses are killed humanely. They point out that the slaughterhouses provide jobs.

The consumption of horse meat has a long history, but in some cultures it is considered taboo. Some places it is a delicacy, and yet others it is just another staple food.

Wikinews Shorts: August 14, 2009

A compilation of brief news reports for Friday, August 14, 2009.

A body recovered by Indonesian police on August 8th is not that of Noordin Mohammed Top. The Indonesian authorities had been optimistic that Top, the mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombings, had been killed on Saturday in a gun battle that concluded a 17 hour siege in the Temanggung district of Central Java.

DNA tests suggests that the body is that of a man identified only as Ibrahim, a florist who was the inside man in the attacks on luxury hotels in Jakarta this July.

Attempts by President Barack Obama to reform the health care in the United States has been met with grassroots opposition. Critics fear that Obama’s reforms are an attempt to socialise health care. However, the President has dismissed such apprehension as an attempt to “scare and mislead” by vested interests hoping to derail the reforms.

Opposition adverts which feature the alleged failures and rationing of healthcare in the British National Health Service (NHS), have been rebutted by citizens, politicians and the media. Spurred on by American commentators that described that the NHS as “evil’ and Orwellian, with over a million responses to an on-line Twitter campaign, called welovetheNHS started in support of the NHS.

Cardio Exercises Are A Must For Middle Aged Folks

 • Get More Information Here:
 • Best Sarms Online

By Adaleya Johnson

The body starts weakening and losing its vigor as people reach their “middle ages.” It takes more effort to do regular activities, an element of procrastination creeps in, body pains set in, and tiredness sets in earlier, when you reach your middle age. That’s natural – it’s a part of aging. However, all middle-aged folks can tone up their body and keep it in good shape to minimize the effects of aging. This is where cardio exercises can help.

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, cardio workouts can help set aging back by a whole 12 years! What does this mean? This means that if you are 45, your body can feel like it did when you were 33. The Journal says that any age is good to start – it doesn’t matter how old you are. You’ll start reaping the benefits of cardio exercises as soon as. However, for the body to feel 12 years younger, a middle-aged person must keep doing his cardio exercises for a long period of time. This is good enough reason for all middle-aged people to hit the aerobics floor with all they’ve got.

Cardio exercises help strengthen the heart. They also challenge the lungs. The idea is to work out until your heart achieves its peak rate (typically 100 + your age), and then relax for some time before starting again. Middle-aged folks must perform high-intensity cardio workouts for at least 4 times in a week, and here is some useful information:

1. Take up a sport if you’d like that – it’s fun to play a game because all games are competitive. Plus, there’s a lot of running around in games like tennis, football, and basketball. You can really get some serious cardio exercising benefits and have a lot of fun while playing a sport.

2. According to researchers, anaerobic exercises, which quickly get you out of breath, help you increase your HGH production (Human Growth Hormone). HGH is a hormone that is made by the pituitary gland in the brain. It helps in the body’s growth and its production declines as we age. These researchers also say that anaerobic exercises are the most powerful anti-aging exercises. You can try out an anaerobic exercise right on your treadmill – do this: jog at 6 kilometers per hour for 5 minutes and then increase the speed to 10 kilometers per hour for one minute before reducing it back to its original speed. Repeat 4-5 times. This regular “1-minute intense sprinting” on the treadmill will get you your anaerobic. However, you must consult your doctor before following any online advice.

3. An age-old research study published in the magazine, Circulation, in 2001 concludes that middle-aged people can reverse aging with cardio exercises. It states that 20 days of complete inactivity impacts the heart in the same way as 30 years of aging does. It also states that 6 months of moderate cardio workouts can easily reverse the effects of aging on the body.

So, if you’re middle-aged and inactive, now is the time for some action. Researchers say that all Americans will be overweight by 2048. Do you want to be just another statistic? No, you don’t. Now is the time to shed your procrastination and get into some heavy-duty cardio training. Good luck.

China resumes deportation of refugees back to North Korea

Monday, July 26, 2021

In an article published by Human Rights Watch late last week, over 1100 North Koreans living in China are described as being at risk of being sent back to North Korea. According to the article, around 50 North Korean defectors and escapees were recently sent back to their place of origin following their arrest by Chinese police and border authorities.

An anonymous witness told Radio Free Asia that “The Dandong customs office was opened just for today and they [Chinese border authorities] sent about 50 North Korean escapees back to North Korea on two buses.” The witness also added that “dozens of police officers lined up in front of the customs office to block public access and ensure nobody was filming.”

As a reaction to the sudden spread of COVID-19, North Korea closed its borders totally, which halted the repatriation of defectors. The recent repatriation was the first of its kind since January 2020, when North Korean authorities closed the Sino-Korean border as a way to protect the country from the pandemic. Repatriations of this kind were held routinely for the defectors who had crossed the Yalu and Tuman rivers into China before the pandemic occured.

This repatriation action caught the eye of the United States’ Department of State, with an official spokesperson saying that “We are particularly concerned by recent reports that nearly 50 North Koreans were forcibly repatriated.” The spokesperson said that the United States urges China to “fulfill its international obligations as a party to the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol and the UN Convention Against Torture.”

Radio Free Asia’s article cites that some among the 50 repatriated were soldiers and pilots who had served in the North’s Air Force.

Returning such refugees to North Korea, where they face imprisonment and torture from the authorities, is a violation of the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention, 1967 Protocol and the UN Convention against Torture. According to the article by Human Rights Watch, at least 1170 North Korean people are held in various prisons in China’s Jilin and Liaoning provinces, where they face deportation after being charged with criminal offenses.

Both countries maintain a friendly relationship, with both leaders having exchanged greetings on July 11, as reported by state newspaper Rodong Sinmun. A 1986 bilateral border protocol signed by both nations warrants the deportation of any and all defectors and other North Koreans illegaly staying in China.

According to data reported by South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, only two defectors from the North reached South Korea between April and June of this year, the lowest number ever recorded since the Ministry started recording the inflow of defectors. Such a decrease in the amount of defectors is mainly being attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, as North Korea entirely stopped people from leaving or entering the country, while still claiming to have no cases of the virus.

North Korean defectors often transit through China to reach either South Korea or another safe country, as the Sino-Korean border is easier to cross than the North-South border. The closest defector-friendly country accessible by land to defectors is the South-East Asian country of Vietnam.

Dieting Without Having To Be Hungry At All

 • Get More Information Here:
 • Motor Insurance Quote Online

By James Brown

The main reason you might be reading this article is that you want to lose weight without having to go hungry for long. Dieting does not involve starving yourself until you get your desired result. The common idea for weight loss meals for most people is that it is still a complete meal – meat, fish, and grains without any trace of preservatives. Yes, it may be a good idea but this kind of diet will not satisfy your hunger at all. This form of dieting only lasts long enough for the next meal. Some may even be tempted to make nibbles in between meals because their hunger was not satisfied. By doing so, it destroys the whole idea of dieting.

This may bring in some good news for you. There are weight loss meals out there which allow you to take in as much as you can. Read on and hopefully this article will bring in some fruitful results.

Take in a lot of fresh fruits as needed. Whenever you feel hungry, grab a banana to satisfy that hunger. Limit yourself to taking in only fresh fruits all the time. What about the amount of nutrition we can get out of them, you might ask. Fruits have been the source of food for almost any organism for ages. They have long been in existence and the benefits you can get out of them have been affirmed by most nutritionists, dietitians and doctors.

For some people who, for some various reasons, can not have fresh fruits can opt to consume dried fruit foods instead. These are similar to the fresh fruit diet mentioned above except that of course, this alternative involves consuming only dried fruits. Be careful in choosing dried fruits from the market. Ensure that they do not have preservatives or any chemicals added to it. It defeats the purpose of being healthy as you may be taking in toxins that could be harmful to your health. It is important that they be all natural (no coloring added or any preservative added to retain its color) or they be organically grown dried fruits.

Of course, you could always choose to have the fruit juice alternative. Just like all the forms of “fasting” mentioned above, this alternative only allows taking in juices to lose weight. Only juices made from fresh fruits are allowed so forget about buying ready to drink juices or ready to mix juices from the market because they also contain preservatives that may be harmful to your health. Try shopping for a good juicer instead. Ensure that you pick the one with the best quality as this machine will be your best tool in helping you lose weight.

All these types of meals have a common denominator – you can have as much as you want. That is what makes it advantageous over the other forms of weight loss meals. You won’t have to deprive yourself in case you get hungry. Whatever type you choose, a combination, or all of them perhaps, it is important that you stick to it. Be determined to lose that excess weight and you’ll surely be on the go to have the weight and shape you have always wanted.

Trial against Church of Scientology begins in France

Monday, May 25, 2009

The Church of Scientology in France is in court today, fighting charges that the organization has been a part of “escroquerie en bande organisee”, organized fraud. Prosecutors claim that the Church is engaged in illicit practices in attempts to sell their alleged self-help material. The Church also faces charges of illegally operating as a pharmacy by illegally treating individuals with prescription medications.

The charges come from an unnamed woman, who in 1998 purchased nearly 21,000 euros (US$30,000) worth of Scientology self-help material which allegedly included prescription drugs. After a few months passed, the woman said she felt like she was being scammed because her condition was not improving. Lawyers for the woman say the Church tries to make a profit by pressuring individuals into believing they are going to be cured of their illnesses.

She claims she spent her entire life savings on the organization’s products, including Scientology books, vitamins, and a device called an E-meter. Her attorneys say they will attempt to show that organized criminal fraud is inherent within Scientology practices. There were originally a total of five plaintiffs in the case, however three withdrew their complaints after coming to financial settlements with the Church of Scientology.

Following several complaints from other unnamed individuals and an investigation, investigating magistrate Jean-Christophe Hullin in January, ordered the Church’s “Celebrity Center” and bookstore in France and its seven managers to be put on trial for fraud and “illegally practicing as pharmacists”. Hullin stated that the Scientology organization is driven by “an absolute obsession with profit”, and is “first and foremost a commercial organisation”. Sophie-Helene Chateau, presiding judge in the case, stated that the court’s purpose is “to find whether the acts in question constitute a crime. … It is not up to the court to decide questions of society”.

If convicted, the managers of the Scientology organization in France under investigation could serve a ten year jail sentence in addition to a fine of one million euros. Those investigated include the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Paris itself, its manager Alain Rosenberg, and five other individuals. Rosenberg is the CEO of the Spiritual Association of the Church of Scientology-Celebrity Centre (ASES-CC), the official term for the Church of Scientology in France. One defendant died since the charges were initially filed against seven managers in the Scientology organization. The defendants are accused of “exerting a psychological hold” on vulnerable individuals so they would give money to Scientology.

The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence.

In September of 2008, the Church released a statement saying that they felt “stigmatized” by the French judicial system.

“The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence,” the Church said in a statement to the press. The Church denies all the charges and says that no one was manipulated into buying their material.

“If the church’s methods prove to be crooked then we must ask serious questions about whether it can be allowed to remain in business on French high streets.”

“If the church’s methods prove to be crooked then we must ask serious questions about whether it can be allowed to remain in business on French high streets,” said plaintiff’s attorney Olivier Maurice. If the Church is found guilty, Scientology could be fined approximately 5 million euros (US$7 million) and ordered banned in France. If banned in France, the Scientology organization then has the option to appeal, which could drag out the legal process. The trial will run until June 17.

According to French law the Scientology organization is regarded as a sect in the country, and not a religion. In 2006, a report of the parliament in France characterized Scientology as a “dangerous sect”. This is not the first time the Church has been accused of fraud in France. They have also been convicted of it several times, including the Church’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard who was convicted of fraud in 1978. In 1997 the Church was convicted of fraud in Lyon and 1999 in Marseille. “There are those who handed over tens of thousands of francs at the time. Now, it can be 300,000 euros per person, or more,” said Roger Gonet, a French former Scientologist who was a plaintiff against the organization in 1996. The 1978 convictions included Hubbard and his wife at the time, Mary Sue, both now deceased, and two other Scientologists. Hubbard, along with the two Scientologists fled France, never to return, and never served a prison term.
