Facts On Double Eyelid Surgery

By Dr Andrew Kim

One of the most prominent features of the face are the eyes, this is why for those who find their anatomical makeup to lack in enhancing this feature, they find solution in an eyelid surgery. This cosmetic procedure is more popular among Asians who characteristically have creaseless eyelids, which is why it is also called the Asian Eyelid Surgery.

A double eyelid surgery however is not limited to those who want to add some definition to their eyes, but it is also beneficial for those who have saggy or wrinkly eyelids. This in effect will make them look tired and older. It also improves those eyes that look puffy or those that do have creases but are not visible enough. Through this, a person can come out with more youthful and refreshed features. In addition to that, it can also improve a person’s vision.

Some may be daunted by the term ‘double eyelid’ thinking that it may add another eyelid. But to form the ‘new’ eyelid, the surgeon will only make alterations to the skin and not add something more.

Through a consultation, you can ask the surgeon on which would be better for you. You can choose on whether you have surgery done on your upper eyelid, lower eyelid or on both.

There are two approaches used in a double eyelid surgery, these are incisional and suture technique. The former is creates permanent results, while the latter can will only be a temporary measure. The incisional technique permanently attaches the eyelid to the muscle creating a natural movement of the crease, demonstrated by a visible crease as the eyes are opened and disappears when the eyes are closed. The suture technique on the other hand has some limitations because the sutures that hold the crease will make it behave unnaturally.

The incisional technique is preferred better than the conventional suture method because the latter has high rate of breaking with folds that are not really defined which eventually fades overtime. The average breakage rate is one for every year according to a published report. Using incisions for eyelid surgery gives the surgeon more access to the muscles and fat deposits and manipulate them better together with skin reconstruction. But it may have a longer healing time.

Aside from making the incisions outside the skin, the surgeon can also make incisions inside the lower eyelid to remove those fats that are causing eye bags. In total this gives the person more symmetrical appearance.

Recovery after a double eyelid surgery can take a couple of weeks. During the initial days of healing, an ice pack can be placed over the site to ease swelling and bruising. Ointments and eye drops may also be prescribed to assist in healing and to prevent dry eyes. You would even have to wear dark eyeglasses for at least a week to protect the area from sun and exposure to other materials.

Double eyelid surgery is a delicate process that requires careful handling with a fine grasp of the aesthetics. And for this, you need to find a talented and experienced surgeon. Check the surgeon’s previous work and his success rate. With that you can be a step closer to getting that those set of eyelids that are more defined.
