Sell Italian Ice with Your Very Own Ice Cart

by

Jenna Rivers

You ve seen them in the neighborhood or around the county fair. They are practically an American symbol. Anyone is able to enjoy a frozen treat to cool off from a very warm day whether it\’s in the park, the beach or other location imaginable.

For centuries, food has been sold on the streets using various carts allowing delicious treats to be enjoyed while one is out and about. Now when talking with regards to the ice cart, these special designed carts had to wait for technology improve to enable them to be utilized like they are today. First of all refrigeration in a mobile form had to be invented as well as the creation of what is known as Italian Ice. Made much like ice cream, Italian Ice is a frozen dairy free dessert that mixes all the ingredients while simultaneously freezing them. Refrigeration is necessary to keep the Italian ice cold until it can be served to the hungry consumer. Place a refrigerated container filled with Italian ice on wheels and you have the means to put a smile on every face you encounter. You own an ice cart.

There are, obviously, numerous ways to dispense Italian ice to those that are in need of refreshment. The frozen section in a food market is likely to be stocked full of your favorite treat. You can actually open an Italian ice shop on a quaint street that sees plenty of foot traffic. Maybe a booth or cart at the local sporting venue or even the zoo where people are out enjoying the hot day would more inclined want your products to cool off. Although all these are amazing ideas, you will need to locate the ideal spot in which to get the most foot traffic. The cart however would be the most suitable option for bringing the Italian Ice to people who would be tempted to partake in this delicious treat.

Using a cart to sell the ice has a wide variety of advantages associated with it. First, it is easily portable. You will always find downfall\’s when running a shop in which not only can\’t you be mobile, your customers would have to come to you and any construction or traffic that would imped your sales will be detrimental to any business. This is simply not a problem with a cart; when the people move you and your cart can follow.

Having the capacity to go to special venues and events would also further come in handy when your equipped to travel to different locations.. Some events like outdoor concerts, festivals or fairs aren\’t permanent fixtures in a town or city. Because of the novelty they attract a lot of attention when they arrive. A cart can be easily transported to whatever attraction comes.

Third, a cart does not have any regular business hours. If you own a shop you typically would have set business hours therefore it would not be as flexible. Stores will be required to have normal business hours. As carts tend to be more mobile, the hours will be up to you. This provides more versatility for cart owners. There\’s no need to open every day unless you want to.

Last, a cart has little business expense. Operating a business can be expensive. Things such as insurance, wages, rent, inventory are expenses that should be consider. With a cart all you need to pay for is the cart as well as the Italian ice that you sell. In case you decide to bring in help to work your cart, then wages must be figured into your expenditures.

When thinking about starting a new business venture, selling Italian Ice from your own cart can provide independence as well as great opportunity for you to make a good profit too. Should you do well in your venture, perhaps investing in more than one cart would be a possibility to seriously consider in order to reach more people and increase your profits.

Wikinews’ overview of the year 2007

Monday, December 31, 2007

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2007 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 year’s time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2007, what would the question be? The year that you first signed on to Facebook? The year Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse fell apart? The year author Kurt Vonnegut or mime Marcel Marceau died, both at 84?

Let’s take a look at some of the international stories of 2007. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in bold.

Ralph Nader calls out Democrats for financial bailout

Correction — Aug 2, 2010 Nader referred to the 1999 repeal of the 1933 Glass-Steagal Act. The Wikinews article omitted the word “repeal” from the account of Nader’s speech.

Sunday, October 5, 2008

Independent U.S. presidential candidate Ralph Nader had harsh words for the Democrats who engineered yesterday’s passage of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, a bailout of the U.S. financial system. At a campaign stop in Waterbury, Connecticut on Saturday, Nader said that Democrats passed up a chance to enact re-regulation of the financial system and instead gave Wall Street everything it wanted.

According to Nader, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), and other Democrats considered but rejected measures such as a tax on transactions of derivatives (a “speculation tax”) because of their financial ties to Wall Street and its lobbyists. He said that Representative Chris Murphy (D-CT), who represents Waterbury, had “become a toady” of Nancy Pelosi. He drew enthusiastic applause by calling Murphy “a dynamic fraud”, and referred to Senator Joe Lieberman as “the Hermaphrodite of American Politics”. For Murphy and Representative Chris Shays (R-CT), Nader said, supporting the bailout despite the opposition of constituents was a “profile in betrayal”. Because there were no public hearings where taxpayers and experts could weigh in on the bailout, Nader characterized it as a return to “taxation without representation“—under “King George IV” 225 years after the 13 colonies were taxed under King George III.

Asked about causes of the financial crisis, Nader pointed to the deregulation of the financial sector with the 1999 Glass-Steagall Act and further deregulation in 2000, as well as the rise of overly complex financial derivatives. He outlined a four-part reform plan:

 1. Re-regulation of financial markets
 2. Increasing shareholder control of corporations
 3. Taxpayer equity as part of any bailout, as in the 1979 bailout of Chrysler Corporation
 4. Making speculators pay by enacting a 0.1% tax on derivatives transactions (which Nader said will amount to over $500 trillion this year)

Regarding the equity warrants included in the passed bailout, Nader relayed word from an unnamed source that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson had told Wall Street executives “don’t worry, it’s not enforceable”.

Nader told reporters that he had abandoned the Green Party because “Greens are not disciplined, and they’re not mature”, and also lack the fund-raising capabilities to break into mainstream political discussions. “They bicker and bicker,” he said, pushing out their best people. However, he endorsed several local Green Party candidates, including Chris Murphy’s opponent Harold Burbank.

The virtual media blackout for third party campaigns by national newspapers and networks has been a source of continual frustration for the Nader campaign, as well as the campaigns of Libertarian Bob Barr and Green Cynthia McKinney and the post-campaign activities of Republican Ron Paul. According to Nader, reporters tell him that editors of national media are “very bigoted against third party and independent candidacies”. Even journalists for taxpayer-supported media, such as National Public Radio‘s Terry Gross and the Public Broadcasting Service‘s Jim Lehrer, have shut him out during this campaign. Debates, he lamented, are controlled by corporate interests through the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Nader spoke to a supportive crowd of about 60 people and his campaign raised over $2000 at the event, their third visit to Waterbury. The event took place in the former building of a closed-down bank.

Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden fights back after invasion of German naked hikers

Saturday, January 31, 2009

A local Swiss government has shown some bare cheek and has taken action, after hordes of German naked hikers rambling across the Swiss alps au naturel, caused indignation amongst locals.

Authorities in Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden have warned that starting from February 9, the government will impose hefty fines of 200 Swiss Francs (£122, €135) on naturists found walking or hiking in the nude without clothes in the picturesque mountains because of a recent influx of visiting German nudists.

The new ordinance is expected to be passed this spring. If it is approved by the local parliament on February 9 it should be effective on April 26. The Swiss canton aims to stop spread of ‘indecent practice’ by minimally-clad German climbers.

The problem started with a group of “boot-only hikers” who were stopped by the police in the Alpine region last autumn. They had wandered there regularly, proudly marching through nature with bare bums, and had also advertised what they thought was a naked paradise on the internet. But it was all too much for the Swiss.

A nude rambler dressed in nothing more than a rucksack and walking boots in the eastern Appenzell region was arrested and detained in the canton, but authorities were unable to file lawsuit because the act was not punished by law or ordinance at the time.

“We were forced to introduce the legislation against this indecent practice before the warm weather starts,” Melchior Looser, the canton’s justice and police minister, said. “Ultimately, in the summer lots of kids stay in our mountains,” he added.

In the guidelines imposed, arrested offenders who cannot pay the fine, will face legal action. The new enabling ordinance has, however, been met with protests by nude hikers. “We simply try to tune into nature. It’s the most harmless pursuit possible,” said Dietmar, age 58, a German lawyer.

German tabloid Bild Zeitung has editorially attacked Swiss intolerance and even suggested nudist alternatives worldwide, after hinting a Swiss tourism boycott. Local authorities of Harz mountain range in central Germany have also announced the openness to any visitor of an “official naked walking route” in nature’s outdoors.

Freikörperkultur (“FKK”), or “free body culture”, is a popular pastime in Germany. It is a German movement which endorses a naturistic approach to sports and community living. Behind that is the joy of the experience of nature or also on being nude itself, without direct relationship to sexuality. The followers of this culture are called traditional naturists, FKK’ler, or nudists.

The naked ramblers have hoped it doesn’t lead to another naturist-clothed ‘war’, like the one at a beach between German and Polish holidaymakers in 2008. Naturism has roots traced from the start of the 20th century. “Abandoning unpractical clothes enables a direct contact with the wind, sun and temperature”, naked hiker website nacktwandern.de stated.

But Markus Dörig, a spokesman for Appenzell Innerrhoden canton has defended the law, explaining that the “public nuisance” was a foreign import. “We have been receiving many complaints. The local people are upset and we in the government share their concern. How would one feel if one was to go walking in nature and suddenly came across a group of naked people? They are definitely not people from the area, and I think many of them come from Germany,” he noted.

“We are a small and orderly community and such things are simply out of place here. Perhaps in vast mountain areas naked people would not be much of a problem but here they simply stick out,” Dörig added. “I can understand that we all have to live in this world together,” said Barbara Foley, International Naturist Foundation member of the central committee. “But I would certainly enjoy doing the hike in the nude and I wouldn’t want to be deprived of it. It’s nice to feel the sun on your skin. Maybe they should designate a couple of trails and people would know they might come across naturists there,” she added.

Appenzell Innerrhoden (Appenzell Inner Rhodes) is the smallest canton of Switzerland by population and the second smallest by area, Basel-City having less area. The population of the canton was 15,471 as of 2007, of which 1,510 (or 9.76%) were foreigners. The canton in the north east of Switzerland has an area is 173 km². It was divided in 1597 for religious reasons from the former canton Appenzell, with Appenzell Ausserrhoden being the other half.

Appenzell is the capital of this canton. The constitution was established in 1872. Most of the canton is pastoral, this despite being mountainous. Cattle breeding and dairy farming are the main agricultural activities: Appenzeller cheese is widely available throughout Switzerland. Due to the split of Appenzell along religious lines, the population (as of 2000) is nearly all Roman Catholic (81%), with a small Protestant minority (10%).

The town, however is far from liberalism: the canton granted women the right of suffrage only in 1990 under pressure from the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland and international human rights groups. The Alpine village of Appenzell Innerrhoden, being known for its beautiful landscape, has recently been declared a “naked rambler paradise” by a German mountaineering website, which was created by a lobby group of hikers.

Acupuncture And Acupressure Are They The Same?}

Some people may confuse acupuncture with acupressure and vice versa. Although both lie on the belief that the human body needs to have a balanced flow of energy in order to be healthy, they are different methods of healing. Typically, they use meridians or points in the body that when stimulated, allows the body to regain the balance of the flow of energy. Both are considered pseudoscience because there is no scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness in healing and relieving certain conditions. Some experts say that these treatments may only give placebo effects to its clients. Others say that the stimulation done with the use of hands and needles releases endorphins and other natural chemicals that produces analgesic effect on the body.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a healing art that dates back in ancient China. It is done with the use of needles which are sterile, disposable and thin. The needles used are different from that used by medical professionals in administering medications which is why, when properly done it does not cause pain or discomfort. These needles are believed to reach the meridians and release it from obstructions. The person undergoing this procedure may only feel a twinge especially on the affected area. Nowadays, this procedure has been modified and studied to ensure safety of the practice. This should be done by trained acupuncturists who have undergone proper education so that the client receives more benefits than harm. The advantage of acupuncture is that the use of the needle provides more accuracy when treating an affected area so it is able to provide quicker relief.

Acupressure

Acupressure is another alternative healing method which originated in China and has existed before acupuncture. It also uses meridians and points in the body in order to have a balanced flow of energy. However, the stimulation is not by the use of needles, but by hands alone. This is somehow comparable to a massage. While acupuncture needs to be done by a trained person, acupressure can be done even by you. All you need to do is learn where the meridians are and what parts of the body they are attached to and you can massage them in order to feel relief from your condition. This is also different from acupuncture which can stimulate many meridians in one time since acupressure only stimulates one or two pressure points during the massage.

Both methods have been said to have favorable effects with the relief of dysmenorrhea, headaches and migraines, back pain, anxiety, depression and allergies. Studies are also being conducted regarding the effect of these methods in relieving side effects of chemotherapy for cancer such as the urge to throw up and vomiting. If you want pain relief that targets the affected area precisely, you can undergo acupuncture. However, if you do not feel comfortable with needles, you can choose acupressure. Both can give relief although the results may vary from person to person, depending on the severity of the condition, your tolerance to pain and your bodys response to the treatment.

Fifteen people killed in attack on Nigerian college

Friday, September 19, 2014

Officials said at least fifteen people were killed in an attack on a teachers training college in the Northern Nigerian city of Kano by a group of armed gunmen on Wednesday. Over 30 others were wounded.

News agencies have reported while there has been no claim of responsibility, suspicion will likely fall on the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram. The group has previously targeted Western-style schools within the country, including past attacks on secondary schools.

According to official reports, police first approached the group in the area of the school, concerned about their unusual activity, and the attackers engaged police in a firefight. The attackers gained entry to the school and started throwing bombs.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan described the incident as a “dastardly attack”. He has already declared a state of emergency in three northern states, and is being criticized along with the country’s armed forces for failure to prevent extremist attacks.

A police spokesman said police killed two attackers at the scene.

Alistair Darling unveils UK’s 2010 Budget

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, today unveiled the country’s final annual budget before the general election. The biggest announcements included abolishing stamp duty on homes under £250,000 for first-time buyers, whilst increasing it to 5% on homes over £1 million. In his statement to the House of Commons, the Chancellor claimed that the Labour government had made the right calls in countering the global recession, but warned that introducing cuts too early would jeopardise the recovery.

Opposition leader David Cameron attacked the Budget, saying that the headline stamp duty plans were stolen from his own Conservative party. He criticised the amount of government debt, expected to be £167 billion this year, pointing out that it was more than every previous Labour government’s borrowing added together. Cameron continued his call for spending cuts to decrease the deficit, saying it was time for a “radical change of direction”. Darling however maintains that it is too soon.

I know there are some demanding immediate cuts to public spending. I believe such a policy would be both wrong and dangerous.

“I know there are some demanding immediate cuts to public spending,” said the Chancellor to the Commons. “I believe such a policy would be both wrong and dangerous. To start cutting now risks derailing the recovery – which is already bringing down borrowing more rapidly than expected.” This year’s expected government debt is less than the £178 billion that was forecast in December 2009’s pre-Budget report.

There will be an estimated 2.2% real terms rise in government spending this year, and several spending announcements were made. However Darling warned that cuts will follow after 2011, and could be “the toughest for decades”. The Conservatives have said that if they win the upcoming election, they will introduce an “emergency Budget” less than 50 days after taking office.

Among the plans announced by the Chancellor today are a green investment bank to support renewable energy and low-carbon industries. This will have £2 billion, half raised by sale of government assets, including the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, and half raised from private investment. Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds will also have to provide loans worth £94 billion to businesses, with small and medium sized companies receiving at least half of this. These companies will also have access to a new credit adjudicator to oversee banks’ decisions on loans.

There will be a sharp rise of 10% in tax on cider, with wine, beer and spirit duties rising at 2% above inflation as planned. These changes will occur from midnight on Sunday, and tax on alcohol is set to increase a further 2% for two years from 2013. The previously scheduled increase in fuel duty will still happen, but will now be staggered over a longer period.

Other changes include a freeze of the threshold for inheritance tax for the next four-years, whilst higher winter fuel payments for pensioners will be maintained for another year.

Norwegian national assembly votes to allow same-sex marriage and adoption

Thursday, June 12, 2008

The Norwegian national assembly voted Wednesday to change the existing marriage and adoption laws. After debating for several hours, the vote resulted in a 84 to 41 majority in favour of the new law which allows homosexual couples to marry and adopt children.

For the past several weeks, there have been extensive debate over the change, with both sides staging demonstrations in most of the larger cities in Norway. The last time Norway changed the laws regarding marriage was in 1993, when gay and lesbian people were allowed to form partnership unions with similar rights as marriages. The existing law attracted criticism in the last few years for discriminating against homosexuals, as they were denied marriage, adoption, and the use of assisted reproductive technology.

The new law, as proposed, allows marriages between homosexuals, granting them the same rights to religious services in connection with their marriage, as well as the right to adopt children with the same requirements being applied as to heterosexuals. The new law also allows lesbian couples to use assisted reproductive technology.

The new law does not require The Church of Norway to marry gays or lesbians, but it allows ministers to perform this service if the national church council permits it.

Another part of the new proposal, which would have concealed the identity of sperm donors, failed to gain a majority during the vote. Citing the right for children to know their biological parents as more important, a majority of the representatives voted against this part of the proposal.

Being Local Online

by

Susan Payton

So you own a small boutique in a small town. Or youre a doctor. Or you run a produce shop. You think marketing online is for people who have customers nationwide. You couldnt be further from the truth.

More people are throwing out their hefty phone books in favor of using the internet to find local businesses. I, for one, wont even consider a local business if they dont have some kind of web presence. Why? I want to:

a) See what they offer before driving to the business (try before you buy). Im a big menu reader online!

b) Determine whether they deem it worthwhile to develop a decent professional presence on the web. It doesnt have to be fancy, but having a website goes a long way toward making me feel the business understands the value.

If I, for instance, need to find a car collision repair shop in Orlando near where my car was rear-ended last week (true story), I type car repair Orlando in a Google search. I find one where I want it, and call. It may not be true, but if the business has a website, I feel theyre less likely to be a fly-by-night operation. Its all image.

If I searched in the phone book, it would take me five times as long to find a place. Thats how people are wired today. Many of us have found it faster to search for local businesses online.

With that in mind, why ARENT you online?!! You miss out on valuable business by not having a website and being listed with local search sites, and for the amount of money it costs to do this (try $0), you have no excuse!

Here are a few must haves to get up and running in marketing your business online.

1. Website. It should go without saying, but Ill say it anyway. You need a website. It should consist of at least 3 pages, including an overview of what you do, where youre located, and a list of services. If you want to include testimonials or client info, do it. Hire a professional, because a cheaply designed website is an automatic turnoff.

2. Register with search engines. Sites like Google and Yahoo! dont automatically know to find your site, so help them out. Both of these sites (as well as MSN, Alta Vista and many, many more) have a page where you can register your site. This means it will appear in a search for specific keywords the search engine finds on your site. There are even free services that register your website with multiple search engines.

3. Check your keywords. If you sell dog treats, make sure your website says so. Because search engines (which are robots, not people) search your site to get an idea of what you do, make sure you use keywords that people would search for to find you. In this case, include dog treats, doggie bakery, pet food, and dog bone.

4. Go Local. Yahoo! and Google have local business services (free) that allow you to post your company info and address so that it appears on a map for searchers. Because these sites are ranked so highly, if someone searches for dog treats in your area, this will be one of the top results, getting you even more eyeballs on your webpage!

5. Google AdWords. This is optional, but in the vast world of cyberspace, its easy to get lost in the mix without a little advertising. You can create text ads that will appear when someone searches for one of your specified keywords (dog treats). You are charged per click. Its a great way to get exposure to your business, and usually its affordable.

6. Pump your site. Put your website address in your email signature. Put it on your business card and business collateral. Encourage customers to visit and share the site with others.

As you can see, marketing your local business online is a breeze! Try these tips and see if your business doesnt start to escalate!

Bolivian President-Elect takes 50% pay cut to aid social programs

Monday, January 2, 2006

So more staff can be hired for Bolivia’s education, health and social programs, President Elect Evo Morales announced that he and his cabinet will take a 50% pay cut. The 46-year-old leader slashed his future salary of about $3600 a month to $1800.

Raising Bolivia from its situation as one of the poorest countries in the world is a primary intention of the president elect. “It’s a question of sharing the country’s situation among us all.” said Morales. “This is a democratic revolution and we will answer the Bolivian people’s call.”

Cabinet ministers and all 157 members of Morales’ party that were elected to Congress will also take a 50% pay cut, Morales said. The salaries of 157 substitute congressmen will be eliminated.

Morales, who is known across the country as “Evo”, is Bolivia’s first native Indian president. Growing up in poverty has marked his politics. He often says, “For a handful of people there is money, for the others, repression.”

Evo will soon move from his rented single room of a shared house to Bolivia’s presidential palace.

Morales also met with business and civic leaders on Tuesday in a conciliatory meeting. Morales said his government would create a stable legal and economic environment to attract investment and create jobs which was applauded by the Bolivian elite.

“I do not have a professional education, but it is important that we co-operate. You have the professional capacity, I have the social consciousness”.
